….. By the way, I said just now that smoking makes you more stressed, and this is how. When you smoke, you absorb poisons, lots and lots of them. Now how you react to those poisons is of course with stress. It could hardly be otherwise, could it? Your body tries to reject the poisons because they are stressing it. So every single time you light a cigarette your body goes into stress. At the same time, you feel a little relaxed, because you are getting the drug you need, and this conflict is confusing but one feeling tends to be stronger than the other which means you come to believe more in the (artificial) stress relief than the stressor.

So now you understand that smoking is the problem, not the solution, with your stress. You can test this out if you want. When you are feeling stressed, smoke more, then ask yourself if this has in any way lessened the cause of your stress. Yes, you might be feeling a little calmer, but ask yourself if this might have something to do with increasing the amount of nicotine in your body rather than actually changing the reason you are stressed. If you’re not sure, you will be half an hour later when the nicotine level drops and the feeling of stress comes back.

So smoking more when you’re stressed has been an instinctive reaction but it has in fact never helped. Now would be a good time to decide that instead of smoking more when you’re stressed you are going to find some other way of dealing with the cause of the stress that doesn’t involve a lethal addictive drug.
