A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Knaresborough hypnotherapy branch
A concern that we hear regularly when smokers come to us for acupuncture or hypnosis is weight gain. There seems to be a common belief that stopping smoking inevitably means putting on weight. It was one of the issues, if not the main one, that Elaine mentioned to us when she called our national advice service about seeing our Knaresborough hypnotist.
Rather than go into a long discussion at that point, we ask clients two questions. The first is what their present weight is like. The second is whether they actually have experience of gaining weight when they have tried to stop smoking. Elaine’s answer to the first was that she was about a stone or so overweight. Her answer to the second question was that she had put on at least two stone when she had been on Champix. (This is a psychotropic drug prescribed by some GPs.)
Our hypnotherapist in Knaresborough always advises clients to stay in touch with the AfterCare service on this subject. But we were able to give Elaine some help at this point, before the hypnotherapy. There is a very simple reason why people put on weight. The cause of weight is food. For most people, it is that simple. So why do people gain weight when they stop smoking? Well, contrary to the myth most of them don’t. We explained that to Elaine, so she could stop thinking it was going to happen, come what may.
We booked her in to see our hypnotist in Knaresborough, but before that we explained why SOME people gain weight when they stop smoking. Here is the simple version. If you have withdrawal symptoms, your body will look for sugar instead of tobacco. By constantly trying to satisfy a hunger for nicotine with sugar, you will put on weight. What is the answer to this? Well of course, with hypnosis the idea is that you don’t have withdrawal symptoms, so you don’t need to substitute.
That was what happened for Elaine. She left our Knaresborough hypnosis branch a non-smoker. She didn’t have a craving, so she had no need to eat to replace tobacco. And of course she didn’t put on weight. In fact, and this is really interesting, she lost weight. Why was that? Well, that explanation is for another time.
