A SHORT CASE HISTORY

Myra was over eighty. Without wanting to sound patronising, we were pleased that someone of her age wanted to stop smoking. More often than not anyone still smoking in their eighties has given up thoughts of stopping. So we were happy to offer hypnotherapy to Myra.
One of her questions related to the medicines she was on. Many people her age are on one or more prescription drugs, and we do get asked whether there is any reason why they can’t have hypnosis. Our Sandbach hypnotherapist was quite happy to see her though. Smokers on psychotropic drugs need to be assessed before having hypnosis, but that wasn’t what Myra was on. She was largely housebound because of a medical condition, and that was one of the issues our hypnotist was going to have to address.
Smokers in Myra’s situation often tell us that smoking is one of the few ‘comforts’ they have left. Myra was a widow, living on her own. Other than when her daughter visited with her grandchildren, she was free to smoke when and where she liked. She insisted she wanted to see our Sandbach hypnotist, but we were getting quite a lot of contradictory signals about her motivation.
And that was the point. Almost all clients give such signals. It’s because almost everyone who says they want to stop smoking has doubts. That’s normal. In Myra’s case, though, those signals were especially clear. Even so, that was no reason to turn her down for hypnotherapy, so we went ahead.
The hypnosis session turned into quite a lengthy one, because the deeper our hypnotist in Sandbach dug, the more issues she uncovered. In the end, the session was completed, but she didn’t feel confident that Myra was going to succeed. She was wrong about that though. There was one part of the client’s personality that hadn’t come through during the hypnotherapy session. Myra was a tough old bird. She had had a lot of hardship in her life, and she had developed a steely nature. Maybe she had one to start with.
In any case, between making her appointment and coming for her session with our Sandbach hypnotist, she had, it seemed, decided she was going to do this, come what may. At that point all obstacles had been removed. We had to confess a certain admiration for Myra. She could teach the younger ones a thing or two.

….. A word about diet drinks. Aspartame. I won’t say anything about it, because I could get sued by the manufacturers, but I have never let my children consume it, so say no more. One of the biggest favours you can do for your body, after stopping smoking of course, is to cut down on the sugar. You might have noticed I haven’t talked about fats. I don’t care about fats. I don’t care about cholesterol. I care about sugar. Consult any reputable author on nutrition and you will know why.
When you stop smoking the most important dietary advice is to keep your sugar intake low, your protein intake high, and drink plenty of fluids. A word about fluids. Water. Yes folks, it’s God’s gift to mankind. If you are bad at water I can sympathise, because I used to be. I just didn’t get thirsty. Then I started having pains in my kidneys and I suddenly found myself doing something about it. What can you do to drink more water? Well there’s water and then there’s water. I don’t care if it comes from the tap or the supermarket, but cold water, straight from the fridge, is more palatable than at room temperature. If you like fizzy drinks, buy fizzy water. Put some fruit juice in it, say half and half. Then there are herb teas. There are lots of ways you can get your fluid intake up if you really think about it. Water is good for so many reasons, but when you stop smoking it is going to help to detoxify you. Detox symptoms can mimic withdrawal symptoms, and not a few people start smoking again for the wrong reason – because they think they are craving nicotine when actually they are eliminating nicotine nicely.
