THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK
Here is a small taster from the book. If you are going to come to our hypnotherapist or acupuncturist in Uxbridge, it’s a good idea to read the free sample pages first.
Brian phoned us to ask about our programmes and, as we always do, we went through his previous attempts to stop and what he thought his issues were.
We could tell straight away that he wasn’t ready to do this, that he was phoning because he was under pressure to do something. And then he said it, those magic words, I enjoy smoking. We know that as long as a smoker believes that they are not going to stop. The secret is not in them stopping enjoying it, but in them stopping BELIEVING they enjoy it.
Brian went out drinking two or three times a week with his friends (this was in the days when you could smoke in pubs) and in the first consultation it became clear that to him the whole social/drinking/smoking thing was an unbreakable triangle. How could we persuade him that the smoking part had nothing to do with the other two parts?
We gave him the logical arguments, all the things you have been reading about here, and someone who wants to believe them is going to do just that, but he didn’t want to. On the intellectual level he understood, but on the emotional level he rejected the idea that he didn’t enjoy smoking, and this was nothing to do with smoking, it was because to him smoking was the ingredient that kept his circle of friends glued together.
In the end it wasn’t the arguments than won him round. Brian was made redundant. That wasn’t a complete disaster, because it pushed him to do the thing he had always wanted to do, a diving course. The course cost a lot of money, which he paid for with his redundancy payment, but more importantly you can’t smoke if you are a diver, and he wanted to be a diver more than he wanted to smoke. He simply weighed up the relative values of the options available and came to his own conclusion.
A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Uxbridge hypnotherapy and acupuncture branches
Hypnotherapy in Uxbridge
One of the most common complaints we hear from people who come to us to stop smoking is about the NHS. Bernard had a long story to tell us about the help he had received, or otherwise. Why were we interested? Was it because we like to hear about the competition’s failure’s? No, not really. We know what they can and can’t do. No, before Bernard could attend our Uxbridge hypnosis service we needed to know about his history of trying to stop. It was just that in his case it was a catalogue of failures of the NHS and their smoking cessation model.
As important as the detail of the various methods he had tried, was the damage this had done to Bernard’s morale. Every time you try to stop smoking and fail it reinforces your belief that you can’t do it. That is hardly surprising, is it? Not only does this make it harder for you to succeed the next time but it puts you off even trying. It also, by the way, makes it harder for the hypnotherapist you see.
By the time Bernard saw our Uxbridge hypnotist, he was more or less just going through the motions. What he hadn’t appreciated was that he thought he had failed everything, but he hadn’t, He had failed with drugs, but they aren’t everything. The first time he had therapy, he succeeded, because therapy always works better than drugs.

Carol also had a history of failing to stop smoking with NRPs, and normally we would recommend hypnotherapy in this case. However, Carol also had a history of psychiatric problems and our Uxbridge hypnotherapist didn’t feel this was the ideal therapy for her. We discussed this at some length with Carol, who accepted our opinion, and came instead to our Uxbridge acupuncture branch.
One of the questions she wanted to ask before deciding, though, was which therapy is more successful. It’s a logical question, but neither is more successful. They are different, and they deal with the problem in a very different way. If one were less effective than the other, we wouldn’t offer it, would we? No, it’s always about using the right method in each case. And in Carol’s case that was to see our acupuncturist in Uxbridge, which she did. It’s one of the reasons we are so good at what we do. It actually makes us unique, because no-one else can offer therapy according to the smoker’s needs.
TALK WITH OUR ACUPUNCTURIST * FIRST
When you call us about hypnosis, or complete the enquiry form, we will contact you to discuss whether hypnotherapy is what you need. Once we are sure, we will have our Uxbridge acupuncturist phone you. They are highly qualified, of course, but you will still want to see if you like them. Hypnotherapy is great, which is why we provide it, but your success will to some extent depend on your relationship with the hypnotherapist you see.
– or hypnotist, as appropriate..
