Dependence makes people start again
Once a smoker, always someone who used to be a smoker. It might sound a bit tedious but don’t ever forget it. There’s an entire tutorial later about not starting again once you’ve stopped, for obvious reasons, on account of it being a terribly important lesson to learn, but for now you need to understand that the fear that made it hard to face stopping, and the same fear that tried to prevent you succeeding, stays with you for the rest of your life. Alright, it gets less and less, but it never gives up hope that one day you will fall for it. It’s a paradox, but the fear of never smoking again can come back and bite you years after you have stopped and found out that not smoking really is better than smoking. I ask you, how bizarre is that?
The majority of people who stop smoking start again, perhaps more than once. In fact you might say that it takes most people more than one attempt to succeed permanently, like it takes most people more than one attempt to pass a driving test (and why shouldn’t it?). Once you have stopped smoking, you will use almost any excuse to start again, because you have retained the fear of success. You have succeeded, but you never quite believe it, and that, in short, is why so many people start again. The first bit of stress that comes along will make them start again, and that will prove to them that they couldn’t stop smoking. Even though they did.
A SHORT CASE HISTORY

One of the things we do when people call us about stopping smoking is to ask them why they can’t stop. Caroline rang to enquire about seeing our Wood Green hypnotherapist. She answered all our questions, and then we came to the crunch question. What was she afraid of if she stopped? This is something very few smokers are EVER asked. It’s called fear of success. You want to stop smoking, and yet you don’t. So is there something about succeeding that is blocking you?
In Caroline’s case, there was. On a previous occasion she had stopped, on her own, but she had put on a lot of weight – almost two stone. So she saw her doctor and he put her a nicotine replacement product, of course, and she stopped. But she still put weight on. Now, she wasn’t smoking but she was seriously overweight. So what did she do? That’s right, she started smoking again, to lose the weight. We can’t blame her, but it makes no sense. Losing weight is easier than most people think. It’s easier than stopping smoking. Smoking to lose weight makes no sense.
In fact we put it to Caroline, before she came to our Wood Green hypnotherapist, that if her GP offered to prescribe a weight-loss drug that killed three hundred people each day in the UK, she would think he was insane. And that was exactly what she was doing herself. Her fear was genuine, and it wasn’t hard to understand. But where Caroline was going wrong was not only using smoking to lose weight but not understanding why stopping smoking had made her eat more in the first place.
Here’s a simple explanation. You gain weight because you’re eating more calories than you are using up. When you light a cigarette your blood sugar rises. When you don’t smoke, it drops. When you want to smoke but don’t let yourself, it drops and you react by eating instead. You use food to replace tobacco. We explained this to Caroline, and she got the point. What our Wood Green hypnotist had to do was get this message home to her under hypnosis, which he did.
There is another point we need to make though. With hypnotherapy you WON’T WANT to smoke. If you don’t want to, you won’t want or need to replace smoking with food / sugar. The very point of hypnosis is to remove the urge to smoke, which it does very well. Technically, you will still be in withdrawal from nicotine, but you won’t notice. That’s the clever thing that hypnosis does. You are in withdrawal, but you don’t care. After her session at our Wood Green hypnotist, Caroline didn’t care There was therefore no reason either to smoke, or to binge on food.
