From our South Woodford hypnotherapy branch

It would be nice to say that everyone who comes to us for hypnotherapy has an easy time of it. It’s a cliche, but hypnosis is not a miracle cure. Having said that, when someone who has been trying for years to stop smoking comes to us and does stop, that can seem like a miracle to them.

Marcus called us about having hypnotherapy in South Woodford. Improbable as it seemed, he had only recently heard about hypnosis. We tend to think everyone must know about it, especially for stopping smoking, and indeed most people have. Why it had escaped Marcus we didn’t know. Mind you, he knew about it in connection with stage entertainment, and maybe that was the reason. Perhaps he had looked no further than that. So the first thing we had to explain to him is that hypnotherapy is a clinical therapy and has nothing to do with what some people do as entertainment.

In fact we do sometimes have to explain the difference to smokers. The issue for them is fear that what our South Woodford hypnotherapist is going to do is like some stage show they’ve seen. We have to explain that the only connection is that stage hypnotists do use a similar technique to hypnotherapists. What they do then, though, is completely different.

The second thing we had to straighten out with Marcus was his assumption that under hypnosis he would ‘go to sleep and wake up a non-smoker’. We explained that our South Woodford hypnotist was not going to put him to sleep. The trance state used in hypnotherapy is not the same thing. We explained that this trance is a device used to overcome the barriers Marcus put up to stopping smoking in his conscious mind.

By this time it had become clear that Marcus had two issues. First, he didn’t believe hypnotherapy could help him. And second, he wanted to do it because he thought it would produce a miracle! Contradictory notions, but smoking is full of them. We straightened out as much as we could before he came to our South Woodford hypnotherapy branch, but in the end what worked was that it simply worked. He never understood how or why, so to him hypnosis was a miracle. And did it matter?

Here is a very small taster:

….. The sad thing is that the fear of failing to stop smoking actually guarantees that you will fail, because you don’t even try. This is much more common than you might think. Right now there are thousands of smokers out there who won’t try to stop in case they fail, thus guaranteeing failure. It’s crazy, isn’t it? It’s one of the very cunning ways all drugs have to keep people on them.

But by far the bigger problem is the fear of success. A lot of smokers who come to us are puzzled by this expression, so let me explain it. It means you are afraid that if you try to stop smoking you might succeed, despite the belief that that is exactly what you want, because you can’t imagine living the rest of your life without smoking.

There, I’ve said it, and it’s the big one. You can’t imagine living the rest of your life without smoking. I know, I said that just now, but I wanted you to read it again. If you think this applies to you, read on. If not, you think I’m going to say skip the next bit but I’m not, I’m going to say if you don’t think you are afraid of succeeding you are almost certainly deluding yourself. I say almost certainly because we do sometimes meet a smoker in our clinics who is genuinely not afraid of succeeding but I can tell you they are pretty rare. People think they want to stop smoking, but actually they are trying to carry themselves forward with that enthusiasm but it doesn’t make any difference because at some point the fear will come back and bite them.
