THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK
Before seeing our Slough hypnotherapist or acupuncturist, you could read the free sample pages on our website.
Here is a very small taster:
….. In one way, you’re in luck, because you’re reading this Handbook, and by the time you’ve finished it I have some hope you will be thinking differently. Instead of thinking you can’t cope with the stress of life without smoking you will know you can, and even if you can’t it’s not because you’re not smoking.
Instead of thinking life won’t be fun without cigarettes you will look forward to being free, to enjoying going to the pub and not having to go outside and smoke.
Instead of saying one won’t hurt you will ask yourself why the hell you would smoke even one.
Instead of being afraid of stopping you will be afraid to carry on smoking.
Of course, you might not, and maybe now you’re thinking oh no I won’t, but look, if you’re fighting it now you’ve just proved you’ve got the wrong attitude.
A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Slough hypnotherapy branch
Stella wanted to see our Slough hypnotist urgently because she was due to have surgery, She had been told she couldn’t have a general anaesthetic if she was still smoking. We sympathise, but it does raise an issue we have to address. We asked Stella why she had waited until now to do this. And if she hadn’t stopped before now, was she going to start again after the operation?
Our Slough hypnotherapist was able to fit her in at short notice, and we wouldn’t turn her away, but we did ask her to address these questions first. Our job is to help people to stop smoking, but it is also to help them to stay stopped. Stopping just long enough to have her operation was not something we were happy with, even though we were going to help her anyway.
Stella was worried for a moment that we wouldn’t offer her hypnosis, but we assured we would. We have a moral duty to help everyone. But that duty, and that help, go further than sorting out their immediate problem. So our Slough hypnotist booked her in but we arranged to have a preparatory telephone consultation with her a couple of days before her appointment.
What came out in that conversation was why she had never tried to stop before. The answer was that she had. We get quite a lot of people telling us they have never tried to stop smoking before, and then when we question them further what they mean is they haven’t succeeded. Why would anyone say they haven’t tried when they mean they haven’t succeeded? Well the answer seems to be that they treat failure as a half-hearted attempt. And that over time becomes not a real attempt at all. Our Slough hypnotherapist needs to know the facts before she can help a client, and telling her half-truths doesn’t help.
Stella had to see her previous attempts for what they were. Only by doing that could she understand why she had failed. Pretending they weren’t attempts didn’t help, and she did take our point. We have always found it helpful if clients understand their own failed attempts. This is in part because people tend to blame themselves when they fail. Stella had to stop seeing the past negatively. She hadn’t received the right help (because she had always got it from the NHS), so who was really at fault? Anyway, not to go into that too deeply. Stella stopped smoking with our Slough hypnosis service and the past became irrelevant.
