A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Scarborough hypnotherapy branch
We get asked sometimes whether it’s a good idea to have both hypnosis and acupuncture together. It’s a question asked usually by someone who is desperate to stop. That’s not hard to understand. Almost everyone who comes to us has failed with the drug products provided by the NHS, and most have been on an electric cigarette as well.
Maureen was desperate. Her GP had tried everything, and finally he had accused her of not wanting to stop smoking. Our Scarborough hypnotist would never say such a thing. It shows a dearth of understanding of the psychology associated with addiction. The problem is that NHS staff don’t have the training in smoking cessation. They are tasked with offering it, but based on what? Drug company products.
Maureen was considering seeing our Scarborough hypnotist and acupuncturist, but she wasn’t sure how to go about that. Before we could even consider that, we looked at what her smoking cessation problems were. The fact was she had never had acupuncture or hypnosis, so there was no reason to assume she might need both. She was, wrongly, comparing their efficacy with her past experiences. Therapy always works better than drug products. It’s why thousands of people every year stop smoking with therapy after trying the drugs. Why would any Scarborough hypnotherapist do this work if Scarborough GPs had the answers?
The fact is it’s rare for anyone to need two therapies to stop smoking. Fair enough, very occasionally a single acupuncture treatment can complement a session of hypnosis, but there are particular reasons for that. Certainly, we have no record of any client needing acupuncture after coming to our Scarborough hypnotist. And that includes Maureen.
NO, YOU DON'T HAVE TO STOP SMOKING
Sometimes, people come to us not to stop smoking but for smoking reduction. It’s a choice they make, and we publish a book on reduction. ‘No, You Don’t Have to Stop Smoking’ will be of interest even if you do want to stop completely. Why not take a look at it before you visit our Scarborough hypnosis or acupuncture service. Here is a taster to get you started.
….. And here’s the proof. I want you to remember the first time you ever smoked, and if you can’t remember that I want you to think of the first time you did it after you hadn’t for a while, and if you can remember them both then that’s even better, because what you will remember, I am prepared to stake my reputation on, is that it wasn’t very nice. The first cigarette isn’t nice because it’s poisonous, and I think I’m fairly safe in saying that poisons are not, by definition, very tasty. Now ask yourself this: in the years you have been smoking, has tobacco changed? I don’t mean slightly, I mean has it gone from being poisonous to not being poisonous? No, of course not. Which means the cigarettes you smoke now, and ‘enjoy’ are just as poisonous as the first ones which you didn’t enjoy. So why, in heaven’s name, do you enjoy them now? There’s a simple answer, and it’s this: addiction.
Addiction switches off your brain’s ability to tell that something is poisonous. That’s what it’s for. What you think you enjoy now is in fact nothing more than switching off the displeasure of subliminal nicotine deprivation. If this sounds just like the explanation I gave you about stress that’s because it is the same. Displeasure is a stressor. When you relieve that stress it is experienced as pleasure. But just as the relief of stress is not real relaxation because you wouldn’t need it if you didn’t have the stressor to start with, the relief of displeasure is not pleasure, it’s just the relief of displeasure.
You’re still not sure. OK, try this for me. Take a book, a heavy one not this one, and hit your head with it. Am I right in guessing that you don’t like this? Shall we call it displeasure? Now stop hitting yourself. Would you call not hitting yourself pleasure, or the relief of displeasure?
If smoking relieves displeasure, do not ever again make the mistake of thinking you enjoy a cigarette. And if you don’t enjoy smoking, can you give me one good reason why you wouldn’t want to smoke less?
