NO, YOU DON'T HAVE TO STOP SMOKING
Sometimes, people come to us not to stop smoking but for smoking reduction. It’s a choice they make. We publish a book on reduction. It’s called, No, You Don’t Have to Stop Smoking. You might be interested to read some of it before you visit our Sutton Coldfield hypnosis or acupuncture branch. Here is a taster.
….. Whatever else you do or don’t understand in this book, the next two chapters are critical. I am now going to explain the difference between addiction and psychological dependence. This difference is what is going to make it easy for you to become a light smoker. The difference has, by definition, always existed; the problem has arisen because of ignorance both amongst smokers and sadly amongst healthcare and smoking cessation professionals, and I use the last word to indicate people who profess (i.e. claim) to know about these things, but don’t.
You need to read these chapters. You may well need to read them more than once, because when you understand what I am saying you will understand why addiction has nothing whatsoever to do with you reducing the amount you smoke. This is because it is not addiction that makes you a heavy smoker. Addiction makes you a smoker, but it has no bearing on how many you smoke. You need to understand about addiction, because only then will you understand that your addiction has no control over how many cigarettes you smoke.
A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Sutton Coldfield hypnotherapy branch
When Gordon rang us he said he was seventy-five, and what was the point of stopping. There are two answers to this question. The first is age has nothing to do with it. Most smokers imagine that the longer they have smoked the harder it will be to stop, but that’s not true. And the second point is that stopping smoking is only ever a good thing. Giving up on your health because of your age makes no sense.
Our Sutton Coldfield hypnotherapist sees clients from their early twenties right through to their eighties. There aren’t many at each end of this range, mind you. Most young people don’t think it matters, and actually most old people think much the same thing. Neither is true.
Gordon was looking for us to tell him he could carry on smoking. We understood why he would do that. He had tried several times to stop but had never been a non-smoker for more than a few weeks. He had what we call fear of success. This means he couldn’t imagine not smoking. However, not being able to imagine not smoking is no reason to carry on. We explained this to him, and when he spoke with our Sutton Coldfield hypnotist she re-emphasised the point.
It has to be said, though, that he attended the session with less than complete commitment. As long as clients turn up, we can often do the rest. In fact Gordon was surprised at how easy he found it to relax with our Sutton Coldfield hypnotist. She didn’t find him as resistant as she had expected. Perhaps between making the booking and showing up he had come round to the idea. Our therapists tend to be mature people with a lot of life experience. This can make a difference with an older client. Elderly people can find young therapists a bit callow. Our Sutton Coldfield hypnotherapist, Sue Wragg, is in her sixties.
In the event, Gordon and Sue got on really well, and this relationship made a big difference too. Gordon went from doubt to believing in the hypnotherapy, and the therapist. And it might be added that he also came to believe in himself.
