A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Dudley hypnotherapy branch
Ernest had never really believed that smoking was a bad thing. He managed to convince himself that the statistics were lies. This is really unusual these days. Millions of people still smoke, but they don’t do it because they think it’s a good thing. In reality, Ernest didn’t believe that either, but he wouldn’t admit it.
So when he called us about our Dudley hypnotherapy service, it was as if he was in an argument with himself. He had reached a point, at the age of sixty four, where his health was poor. Of course we can never know how much smoking contributes to ill-health, unless it’s specifically smoking related. But by the time he saw our Dudley hypnotist Ernest had come to see that at least it wasn’t doing him any good.
A lot of hypnotherapists subscribe to the idea that you have to want to stop smoking to do so. We don’t. Since no-one has ever satisfactorily defines what ‘want’ means, we look at it differently. Most smokers don’t want to stop, and yet most wish they could. Our Dudley hypnotherapist sees a lot of people for smoking cessation, but they would all define their desire to stop in a different way.
So did Ernest want to stop smoking? Well, if it weren’t for his worsening health would he have even approached us about hypnosis? Probably not. And here we have the contradiction. Despite all the years of kidding himself, now he was faced with the reality. He still tried to convince himself that smoking wasn’t the problem, but deep down he now knew that was a lie. He didn’t need his GP to tell him. His doctor tried him on a range of NRPs, none of which helped, and she put that down to Ernest not being motivated. That wasn’t actually the point. Anyway, having failed with those products Ernest saw our Dudley hypnotist. His motivation still didn’t look good, but we didn’t worry about that. Just coming for hypnotherapy, he was half way there.
And of course he did stop smoking. Interestingly, when we spoke to him afterwards he expressed some doubt that he had stopped. Despite obviously not actually smoking! We could see that the years of believing in smoking were pulling him in the wrong direction. We talked about this, but his ability to understand what was happening was limited. So we had him back to see our Dudley hypnotist for a follow-up session, and his attitude improved markedly.
NO, YOU DON'T HAVE TO STOP SMOKING
Sometimes, people come to us not to stop smoking but for smoking reduction. It’s a choice they make. We publish a book on reduction. It’s called, No, You Don’t Have to Stop Smoking. You might be interested to read some of it before your visit to our Dudley hypnotherapist or acupuncturist. Here is a little taster.
….. I want to look not at cancer, though, I want to look at a specific smoking-related disease that we see a lot, which is emphysema / chronic bronchitis / COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). Put simply, these are conditions in which you do permanent damage to your lungs through smoking, and the word permanent is important here because I think too many smokers simply see these diseases as meaning it is too late to change the outcome. Yes, they shouldn’t have smoked, but they did and now the damage is done so what’s the point in stopping?
Well, there may or may not be a point, but I want to steer clear of that discussion because, and you may remember this, this is not a book about stopping smoking, it’s a book about reducing your smoking. And if our starting point is that you have stopped believing in stopping smoking because you have a fatal lung disease, then what follows is addressed personally to you, so listen up.
