NO, YOU DON'T HAVE TO STOP SMOKING
We help people to stop smoking, but we also help heavy smokers to become light smokers – IF THAT IS WHAT THEY WANT. We have a book on this subject, and there are lots of pages you can read for free. You might be interested to do this before you come to our Carmarthen hypnosis branch. Here is a taster.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DRUGS AND THERAPY FOR STOPPING SMOKING
One of the mistakes smokers sometimes make when visiting our website is supposing that we are going to provide drugs to help them to stop smoking, so here is an explanation of why we don’t do that. First, though, an explanation of what is meant by drugs, and then why we don’t offer them at all.
Drugs mean everything that is either provided by the National Health Service through your local general practice, or purchased over the counter, either from a pharmacy or even a supermarket (or actually even a tobacconist).
These drugs are of two types. The first is nicotine replacement products, normally referred to by the NHS as nicotine replacement therapy. This is a misnomer, which is actually the reason for this article. If you buy something over the counter, even if you do so with a prescription from your GP, that is not therapy, it is a product. Therapy, by definition, is something someone does to you. Clearly, taking something out of a box and sticking on your skin, sucking it, swallowing it or puffing on it is not therapy, because no-one is doing anything to you.
A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Carmarthen hypnotherapy branch
We are sometimes asked whether it is wise to tell other people when you are stopping smoking. Julian was a bit of a secret smoker. A couple of work colleagues knew he smoked, but most people didn’t think of him as a smoker. There was one person, though, who was quite aggressive about Julian’s smoking. His wife.
It was her who contacted us first about booking Julian in to see our Carmarthen hypnotherapist. When we asked her why she was calling, and not her husband, she replied that he was busy at work and had asked her to make the call. That is not unreasonable, but it doesn’t tell us whether the smoker is motivated to stop. We do need to know this, because we can waste time trying to contact a smoker who doesn’t actually want to talk with us.
In fact this happened with Julian. Our Carmarthen hypnotist called him and left a message, and when he had had no reply within a couple of days he called again. Of course, we will only go so far with this. You do get to see when someone doesn’t want to talk to you. And after a while it did look like this was the case with Julian. However, you can never tell, and Julian did actually ring a week later.
However, that wasn’t enough. What came out in that conversation was that his wife had been nagging him. He had kept putting off making the call, and the more he did that the more she nagged. The sad result was that he set his mind against doing it at all. Which was especially sad because he did actually want to stop smoking. Because she nagged he rejected booking with our Carmarthen hypnotherapist, which was in fact what he wanted to do.
Julian arranged a tentative booking but didn’t confirm it, and when we rang him he arranged another one but he didn’t confirm that either. There seemed to be an impasse. In the event, it was resolved when long after we had forgotten about him he called to book up again. This time, there was a different tone in his voice. We didn’t know whether he had just come round to the idea or he had left his wife. A few days later, he came to our Carmarthen hypnotherapy branch and stopped smoking in a single session. He was clearly determined, and turned out to be a model client.
SPEAK WITH OUR HYPNOTIST FIRST
When you enquire about hypnotherapy we will discuss whether it’s what you need. If it is, we will have our Carmarthen hypnotist phone you, because you will still want to see if you like them. Hypnotherapy is great, which is why we provide it, but your success will also depend on your relationship with the hypnotherapist you see.
