Promise Four: Don’t ever light a second cigarette
It is unlikely that the first cigarette you smoke will readdict you. It takes two.
And why, if you have just put a cigarette out and said yuk that was terrible, would you do it again? People do, but they are people who haven’t read this. You have read this, and you are not a lemming. Promise, right now, that if you ever smoke, and it isn’t nice, that you will put it out and put it behind you. To err is human, but to do it again when you have just received a strong warning not to is madness.
So you see, there is nothing in these four promises that’s hard to keep, because they don’t preclude the possibility that you will smoke. They almost assume you will, at some time, but they give you a way out of that mistake. They allow you to see that it is a mistake, that it’s not what you want. Read them as often as it takes for you to believe them, and promise that from now on you will never, ever, forget them.
