A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Southampton hypnotherapy branch
Jo said she had stopped smoking four months before. In that case, we asked why was she calling us about our Southampton hypnotherapist. The answer was that she didn’t exactly mean she had stopped. She was using an electric cigarette.
Our Southampton hypnotist is seeing an increasing number of people using this product. Mostly, they hope it will help them to stop smoking, or they just see it as a safer way to smoke. They then come to ask for hypnotherapy because it hasn’t fulfilled either of these needs. In fact more and more smokers are saying they really don’t like using electric cigarettes.
Jo wasn’t even clear about why she had used it. She had thought about coming to our Southampton hypnotherapist months before, and then changed her mind when a friend bought an e-cigarette. And here she was, back again, unsure what had happened, but perhaps clearer about sorting her smoking out properly. So she was saying she had stopped smoking, but even she understood that wasn’t really true.
Before contacting us again she had been in touch with a couple of independent Southampton hypnotists, but hadn’t been satisfied that they understood her case. Perhaps they didn’t, but it’s not for us to comment. Obviously, we specialise in smoking cessation, so it’s reasonable to say we understand the subject better than most people.
The allure of the electric cigarette does seem to be waning. The effect of so many people trying it is the same as so many trying any other nicotine replacement product. They end up disappointed, which makes the job of our Southampton hypnotist that little bit harder. Still, Jo did very well, and that was our reward for being on top of this development.
THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK
Here’s a snippet from the book. There are lots of pages you can read for free. Do this before you come to our Southampton hypnosis or acupuncture branch.
Promise Two: If there’s no benefit, don’t do it
What benefit have you had from being a smoker? What benefit would you get from one cigarette? Aha, you say, but one won’t hurt. Let’s test that idea. I might step off the kerb with my eyes closed and it might not hurt, because there might be no traffic. But why would I do it? What benefit is there in it? Not why not step off with my eyes closed because it might not hurt, but what would be the point? Saying one cigarette won’t hurt is nonsense. And anyway, it might, because it might be the one that turns you back into a smoker and living the last four years of your life on an oxygen cylinder trying to breathe does hurt, so there.
You spent years wanting to stop smoking, and you finally succeeded. Before you throw all that away you have to promise to prove to yourself that there would be a tangible benefit to smoking one cigarette. If you can’t do that, and you won’t be able to, you have now spent so long thinking about it that the moment has passed. And the moment, remember, always passes.
TALK WITH OUR HYPNOTIST FIRST
When you enquire about hypnotherapy we will discuss whether it’s what you need. If it is, we will have our Southampton hypnotist phone you, because you will still want to see if you like them. Hypnotherapy is great, which is why we provide it, but your success will also depend on your relationship with the hypnotherapist you see.
