A SHORT CASE HISTORY

From our Poole hypnotherapy branch

There are two issues concerned in stopping smoking. One is stopping and the other is staying stopped. Our colleagues in the NHS are often unaware of how these two issues differ, and what the connections are. This is why we see so many smokers who have failed with their drug products. Almost all of the clients we see at our Poole hypnotherapy service have tried to stop at some time, and many of those have succeeded for a while. Maxine was no exception to this. When she called us about booking in she said she had stopped several times.

Each time she stopped smoking it was with an NRP. The question was whether she had stayed stopped after coming off the product. Within a few days of coming off it she was back smoking. So the issue wasn’t staying stopped, it was stopping, because there is no difference between coming of an NRP and coming off cigarettes. We needed to know this before we booked her in to see our Poole hypnotist.

So when Maxine said she had stopped several times this wasn’t true. Staying stopped was probably also going to be an issue for her, but we had to help her to stop first. The problem here was that Maxine hadn’t understood that she had never stopped smoking. She thought she had because she wasn’t lighting cigarettes. Our Poole hypnotherapist explained that this was not true.

We can never be sure to what extent we have re-educated smokers who have been misled. Maxine, though, appeared to give us the benefit of the doubt. Despite everything she had ever been told about NRPs, she did finally come to see that they are smoking by other means. That the issue is not smoking per se, but nicotine. It’s an issue every Poole hypnotist has to address, because most smokers have been on one or more such products before coming for hypnotherapy.

THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK

Here’s a snippet from the book. There are lots of pages you can read for free. We suggest you do this before you come to our Poole hypnosis branch.

Hypnotherapy

Most people do very well, but if you’ve come out of the session and lit up straight away, does this mean you’ve failed? Well, yes, probably, but on the other hand are you any worse off than you were before? Yes, I know you are now poorer, but I mean could you go into Project 10 and pretend it didn’t happen? No? Why not? Because you’re feeling sore about it, probably, but look, are you going to use that as a reason to keep smoking for the next year?

Actually, I will confess what this is about. Alright, you might have just seen a useless therapist, but in our experience that’s not often true. What happens more often is that you are managing to reject the therapy. If you decide, right now, to build on the therapy instead, there is a fair chance, a very fair chance, that in Project 10 you will actually do quite well, and that the hypnotherapy you have had will contribute to that more than you might think.

More probably you came out of the session and didn’t smoke, perhaps you even felt elated and thought wow, this is great, I feel wonderful and I’m never going to smoke again. Good. Keep going, and especially read Tutorial 12 and do Project 12, because with their help you could stay stopped for ever.

On the other hand, perhaps you did the above and now you’re smoking again. At this point you will decide the therapy failed. No, it didn’t. It succeeded – you succeeded – but something has happened since (this is a potential problem with hypnotherapy when it’s done without follow-up support).

You’re thinking can I bear to try stopping again. It’s the wrong thing to be thinking. You have already proved you can stop. Now, it’s a different issue. It’s about staying stopped now, so go straight into Project 12, and if you feel you’ve slipped too far then go into Project 10 first.

TALK WITH OUR HYPNOTIST FIRST

When you enquire about hypnotherapy we will discuss whether it’s what you need. If it is, we will have our Poole hypnotist phone you, because you will still want to see if you like them. Hypnotherapy is great, which is why we provide it, but your success will also depend on your relationship with the hypnotherapist you see.
