….. Finally, what should you do if it goes wrong? Well, it can’t, because you don’t have a target. You mean by that if you smoke, don’t you? Well, we have a funny attitude to smoking in the Institute. We don’t call it failure, ever.
Let’s start again. What do you do if you smoke? You’ve got two choices here. You can say oh well that didn’t last long, I’ll carry on smoking, or you can say oops and carry on not smoking. The point is that smoking, one, or a whole pack, doesn’t actually change anything.
Don’t, whatever you do, think of this as some kind of test. Read through Tutorial 12 again until you believe it. In short, making a mistake and smoking actually has no bearing on your stop-smoking plan. Which means that everything you do is good. Smoking none is good, and smoking two instead of twenty is also good.
The plan you are following in this Handbook doesn’t work or not work. It’s an ongoing project. Go back into any part of it as needed and do some more work on yourself. There’s an e-mail address in the resource listing at the back if you would like to ask a question, or you can even telephone us to talk it through. We won’t mind. We can’t promise you’ll speak to me personally, but everyone is an ex-smoker who stopped with the help of one of our own programmes, and one thing you can be absolutely certain about is that they will be completely non-judgmental about you. If you feel the NHS smokers’ helpline has something to offer, give them a call instead.
Repeat this project every day (but not on the days you don’t feel like it) and any day you can’t make it work, well, who cares, and every day you can make it work is another day of success. You could say you keep failing because there are days when it doesn’t happen, but that’s not true. You keep succeeding, because there are days when you don’t smoke. Keep doing this and there will come a time, I promise, when every day is a success and you have won. And remember, do if for four consecutive days and on day five you are no longer addicted. Wow.
