A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Bristol hypnotherapy branch
Danny (not his real name) called us with a question. He was smoking only joints, and he wanted to know if our Bristol hypnotist could help him to stop. Our short answer to this question was yes, because smoking is smoking. From the point of view of a hypnotist, it doesn’t matter what the cigarette contains. It’s not that simple though, because like most users Danny was mixing his cannabis with tobacco. Where he was a little unusual was that he didn’t smoke tobacco in its own, ever.
He had another issue, which was that he referred to himself as ‘strong-minded’. Strong-minded people are those who decide to do something and achieve it through force of will. If Danny was one of those people why did he need help to stop smoking? Why did he want to come to our Bristol hypnotherapy branch, instead of doing it on his own? It’s an interesting question, but it wasn’t one Danny could answer. He saw the point of the question, but it was a conundrum.
It turned out that his reason for saying this to us was because he had some doubt about whether hypnotherapy can work with a strong-willed subject. Now that really is an interesting question. What Danny meant was that he believed he might not let the hypnotherapy work on him, that he might fight it. Can this happen? Well, yes, our Bristol hypnotist saw a smoker some time ago who just wouldn’t relax enough to get started.
Danny turned out to be a good subject for hypnotherapy. There were some psychological issues, but when aren’t there? And he had two things in his favour. One was that he didn’t drink. Alcohol is of course often a problem when stopping smoking, but it wasn’t for Danny. And, unusually, he didn’t have a large circle of smoking friends. He described himself as the last one in his circle to get his life straight. Our Bristol hypnotist didn’t go into too much detail about what this meant. Some things are best left alone!

Here’s a snippet from the book. There are lots of pages you can read for free. We recommend you do this before you come to our Bristol hypnosis or acupuncture branch.
….. During your Smoke-Free Day, write here a brief diary of what it feels like.The next morning, as early as possible, you are going to smoke a tobacco cigarette, and carry on smoking as normal. At some point during this day, make some comment here about what it feels like to be able to smoke again.
So what have you achieved? I’ll tell you. You have practised not smoking without the fear of never smoking again getting in the way. You have experienced one-day’s withdrawal symptoms unaffected by any of the issues around actually stopping smoking. How are you going to feel at this point? I haven’t a clue. How could I?
But you do. You know if you feel you achieved something. You know now what it is like to experience one issue, a big issue, around stopping smoking separated from the other issues. So now you know the worst it gets.
Now say something about how you feel it went, what you learned, and if it’s worth doing again. Yes, that’s right, I said again. You don’t think that’s it, do you? What you do now depends on how long you think it is going to take you to stop altogether, but I suggest perhaps having a Smoke-Free Day once a week. This will get you comfortable with being in control of tobacco, so it’s a major step toward the day you don’t go back to smoking.
Oh, and by the way, a nice idea, I think. How much do you spend on smoking? For every Smoke-Free Day you achieve, put those dollars or pounds aside for your favourite charity.
