THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK
Here is a very small taster from the book. If you’re coming to our Southport hypnosis or acupuncture service, read our sample pages first.
….. But there is another reason why you smoke them. It’s because you believe you have now failed, that you have started smoking again. You say to yourself well I’ve smoked now so it doesn’t matter if I carry on smoking. It’s incredible but true that the human mind is capable of being that irrational. We have the biggest brain on the planet and there are moments when we are complete idiots. Excuse me but if not smoking for three weeks isn’t success how come smoking five cigarettes is failure? Which is better, not smoking for three weeks or smoking for one evening?
The point is that everyone knows that if you smoke you have failed. It’s rubbish, but that doesn’t stop everyone knowing it. So now you see the way out of this nonsense. You have to understand that smoking does not mean you have failed to stop smoking.
A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Southport hypnotherapy branch
Susie (not her real name) had most of the usual issues people have with stopping smoking, but one was a particular problem. Most people are triggered to smoke with friends, socialising, especially if drink is involved. Susie’s particular problem was that she didn’t know how to say no. Not to herself, but to other smokers.
Stopping smoking is not always only about stopping smoking. Every smoker brings to this their own personality, history and circumstances. It’s one of the reasons the NHS’s drug products are so often ineffectual. Their smoking cessation model says that a given drug (either an NRP or a psychotropic drug), will resolve the smokers problems. But how could that possibly be true? Before Susie came to our Southport hypnotherapist, we needed to uncover all sorts of reasons she was smoking. One of them was a serious lack of self-confidence. It is a sad fact that smoking masks this problem for a lot of people, especially women. Susie had started smoking relatively late in life, during a bad period in her marriage. She soon got into the habit of hiding behind a cigarette, especially in social situations. She had never been a confident person, but her husband took advantage of this, which is a form of abuse. Anyway, Susie came to believe that smoking was somehow making things better, which of course it wasn’t.
Actually, smoking tends to make this problem worse. Only a couple of weeks earlier our Southport hypnotherapist had seen a client, much older than Susie, but another female, who had been hiding behind smoking for so long she no longer believed she could function without a cigarette. In her case, though, she had come to see the mistake she had made. Would Susie?
We have to accept that when a client comes to us to stop smoking they bring a lot of issues that may have little or nothing to do with smoking. Smoking is drug taking, and happy people don’t take drugs. While we’re not saying that all smokers are unhappy, we are saying that you cannot help a smoker if you ignore what else is going on in their life. In Susie’s case, we could help her to stop smoking, but could we help her to stay stopped? If our Southport hypnotist was to help her to stop, she also had to equip her for staying stopped. And to do that she had to know what the triggers were that might make Susie smoke again.
The main one for this client was friends who were not going to support her. Susie had attracted friends who to some extent took advantage of her weakness. We do have to accept there are limitations to how far we can go. We’re here to help people to stop smoking, and those people perhaps have other issues which will impact on our work. But can we change who they are? No, of course not. Our hypnotist in Southport could build into the therapy as much help as possible, but she did have to accept these limitations. As it happened, stopping smoking actually increased Susie’s self-confidence, and that in turn helped her to address issues with her ‘friends’ who were not supporting her. So a good result all round.
TALK WITH OUR HYPNOTIST * FIRST
When you call us about hypnosis, or complete the enquiry form, we will contact you to discuss whether hypnotherapy is what you need. Once we are sure, we will have our Southport hypnotist phone you. They are highly qualified, of course, but you will still want to see if you like them. Hypnotherapy is great, which is why we provide it, but your success will to some extent depend on your relationship with the hypnotherapist you see.
