….. When you are addicted to nicotine, every time you put a cigarette out the nicotine level drops and produces displeasure. But what it also does is increase stress. This is hardly surprising, because after all displeasure is a stressor. Therefore, every time you put a cigarette out you go into subliminal nicotine deprivation, and that is a stressor, and your brain knows the way to relieve the problem is to light a cigarette. So what you have done is develop a cycle of stress and stress relief by smoking. The sad fact is that smoking doesn’t relieve any other stress except the stress of not having smoked for a while. Smoking creates stress and then relieves that stress, but it’s a stress that you wouldn’t have and therefore wouldn’t need to relieve if you didn’t smoke. Smoking makes you believe it relieves stress when all it does is create stress and relieve the same stress. It is self-defeating.
Taking shoes off that are too tight relieves one stress only – the pain in your feet. Removing your hand from the source of heat relieves one stress only – the pain in your hand. Smoking a cigarette relieves one stress only – the withdrawal from nicotine.
And just as taking your shoes off does not in any other way make your life less stressful, smoking a cigarette doesn’t make your life less stressful.
But that’s where the analogy falls apart. You might take your shoes off once a day. All the things you do to relieve a specific stressor are done only from time to time. But how many cigarettes do you smoke? 20 a day? That means that twenty times every day you go into withdrawal from nicotine and raise your stress level, and twenty times every day you relieve that stress by smoking. Is it any wonder that you believe the thing you do more than anything else to relieve stress is the thing that relieves stress?
As a stress reliever tobacco is pretty useless. OK, it’s true that it’s a psychotropic drug, which means it does have some power to alter your brain chemistry, but it’s a very weak one.
