THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK
Here is a small taster from the book. If you are going to come to our acupuncturist or hypnotherapist in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, read the sample pages first.
….. Stressors are events that your body reacts to in a certain way. If you ever get a stress headache you know what I’m talking about. One kind of stressor is the one I was talking about a lot earlier. If you burn your hand you react by removing it from the source of heat. The heat is a stressor.
Some stress reactions are automatic, like this one, and some are learned, like having a strong drink after a hard day at work. If you are wearing a new pair of shoes and they hurt your feet, the shoes are a stressor and you relieve stress by taking them off. This is both automatic and learned, because an animal with a less developed brain would take time to realise that taking the shoes off relieved the pain. On the other hand an animal with a less developed brain would buy the right-sized shoes, even if they weren’t so fashionable, so forget that one.
Do people learn to smoke as a direct consequence of stress? The answer to that is a resounding no. If smoking relieved stress, a lot more people would do it. Remember, eighty percent of the population of most Western countries don’t smoke, so if smoking is so great at relieving stress they don’t seem to have heard about it. So what we don’t have is a great way to relieve stress that people learn about and use. What we do have is a lot of people who smoke and claim it relieves stress, and that would seem to me to be a conflict of ideas.
A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Newcastle hypnotherapy branch
Janet had not really ever tried seriously to stop smoking. This is unusual, because she was in her late forties, and by that time most smokers have at least tried to stop, usually more than once.
So why hadn’t Janet? When she called us about seeing our Newcastle hypnotherapist we had a long conversation with her on the phone first. We do this because we want to be sure the smoker is serious about stopping, and we want to make sure we provide the right therapy. Each smoker is to some extent unique. As a multi-discipline service provider, we offer both acupuncture and hypnosis in Newcastle. Our starting point is therefore to assess the smoker for the most appropriate method.
So why did we suggest Janet see our Newcastle hypnotist? Well, for the very reason that she hadn’t tried to stop before. In fact before we even talked about therapy we did ask her why she needed to come to us at all. If she hadn’t tried to stop, how did she know she needed help? We don’t want people to pay for something they don’t need. Shouldn’t she try at least before coming to us? Her answer was a not-uncommon one. She didn’t believe she could do it on her own. We could have argued with that, but after all she surely knew herself better than we could.
It is surprising how many smokers don’t believe they can stop, when they haven’t tried. The answer, to some extent, is that they have tried. They just haven’t tried very hard, but they count that as trying, and when they don’t succeed they believe that means they can’t. As far as our Newcastle hypnotist was concerned, it was enough to know that Janet didn’t believe in herself.
A lot of smokers believe the myth that stopping smoking is hard. Yes it is, but it tends to get overstated. However, smoking cessation is what we might call bread and butter work for Newcastle hypnotists, and one might ask if it is in their interest to suggest to a prospective client that they go away any try harder. As part of a non-profit medical foundation, we’re not here to charge for things people don’t need, so our attitude is perhaps a little different.
Anyway, back to Janet. She did stop smoking, really rather easily. So did she need to come to us? Yes, she probably did. She had convinced herself that she couldn’t do it. The act of booking to come to our Newcastle hypnotherapist was in itself important. It was a commitment, one she had never made to herself. The hypnosis was surely important, but committing to it was also important. There is nothing wrong with that. If that’s what it takes, then where’s the problem?
TALK WITH OUR HYPNOTIST * FIRST
When you call us about hypnosis, or complete the enquiry form, we will contact you to discuss whether hypnotherapy is what you need. Once we are sure, we will have our Newcastle hypnotist phone you. They are highly qualified, of course, but you will still want to see if you like them. Hypnotherapy is great, which is why we provide it, but your success will to some extent depend on your relationship with the hypnotherapist you see.
