….. So why is it most enjoyable to smoke when you haven’t smoked for a while? No, come on, I want you to think about this as if your life depended on it, which come to think about it it might. Yes, as you have already learned, the nicotine in your body is quickly lost and it puts you into subliminal nicotine deprivation. The lower the level of nicotine, the more you are going to enjoy getting a nicotine top-up.
Let’s just go back to one particular cigarette, the first one in the morning. To most smokers, this is the most important smoke of the day, and often involves one cigarette after another. Perhaps you can’t imagine not needing to smoke first thing, and that scares you. So what is it about that first cigarette? Yes, it’s the longest you go without smoking.
It’s really rather simple. You are in deeper withdrawal at that time than at any other. (In fact, it would be reasonable to say that at that moment you have stopped smoking.) Alright, that doesn’t sound so surprising, but think now about what exactly that means. It means, and here there should be a roll of drums, that the pleasure of smoking isn’t actually pleasure at all. It’s the relief of displeasure.
