THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK

Before seeing our Greenford hypnotherapist, you might like to read the free sample pages on our website.
Here is a taster:

Habit, what it isn’t, and why it doesn’t matter.

A typical discussion with someone calling us about one of our programmes:
‘So, what’s the problem, why can’t you stop?’
‘Dunno. Just a habit, I guess.’
‘Really?’
‘Uhuh.’
‘Alright. Would you like some help with that?’
‘Pardon?’
‘Would you like me to tell you how to overcome the problem of your habit so that you can stop smoking?’
‘Um, will it cost anything?’
‘No.’
‘OK then.’
‘First let’s define what we mean by habit. Would you agree with me that what you mean is that you tend to smoke in certain situations, like with a drink, or a cup of coffee, or after a meal, or when you’ve finished a job, or when you get in the car after work, or when you’re going to make a long phone call?’
‘I suppose.’
‘Are you smoking now?’
‘Um, yes.’
‘Good. Now, would you also agree that you smoke at all of those times habitually because you’ve got cigarettes with you all the time and it’s easy to pick one up and light it without thinking?’
‘Well, yes.’
‘Excellent.’
‘Is it?’
‘Yes. You have now resolved the reason you can’t stop smoking.’
‘I have?’
‘Yes. You can’t stop smoking, you say, because of the habit. And the habit is a problem because you’ve always got cigarettes with you. So don’t have them with you. Don’t buy cigarettes. You have now stopped smoking.’
‘But…’
‘Yes?’
‘But if I didn’t have them I would go out and buy some.’
‘I know you would. But why?’
‘Because I want them.’
‘Why?’
‘Well, I can’t stop smoking, obviously.’
‘Thank you for saying that. You can’t stop smoking so you buy cigarettes, and then because you’ve bought them you’ve got them and because you’ve got them you smoke them. Habitually. But it wasn’t the habit that made you buy them in the first place, was it?’
‘Well, no.’
‘No, something else made you buy them, and that something is what we call addiction. Because you are addicted to nicotine you buy cigarettes and smoke them habitually. Resolve the right problem, the addiction, and the habit will vanish.’
It’s completely irrefutable logic.
