THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK
Before seeing our Ealing hypnotherapist or acupuncturist, read at least some of the sample pages on our website.
Here is a very small taster:
….. People often say they don’t have withdrawal symptoms when they stop smoking. Well, that might or might not be true, because there is one particular symptom that many people fail to interpret as such. Fair enough, headaches, sweating, shaking, these are withdrawal symptoms that are common to many drugs. Coffee addicts experience them, for example. But there is an important difference between the addiction to nicotine and the addiction to almost every other substance people abuse.
It is used more often. There are very few people who smoke twenty cigarettes a day and take any other drug that often as well, even coffee. And what is the point to this? The point is how taking a drug that often affects your brain. You see, every time you put a cigarette out you go into what we call subliminal nicotine deprivation, which means the nicotine level drops without you noticing it – yet.
Long before you can possibly experience conscious withdrawal symptoms your body is already sending signals to your brain that you are withdrawing. And the brain, bless it, doesn’t want you to have withdrawal symptoms so it tells you to light a cigarette before they can happen.
Therefore the craving/desire for a cigarette is itself a withdrawal symptom. Believe me, even if you think you have never experienced withdrawal symptoms you have, just before you lit the next cigarette, because what made you light it was the fact that you were in withdrawal from the last one.
A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Ealing hypnotherapy and acupuncture branches
We provide both therapies at this location, so here is a very short story about each one.
Hypnotherapy in Ealing
Janice had previously had hypnosis for stopping smoking, and had succeeded very easily. She stayed stopped for over two years, so when she called us about seeing our Ealing hypnotist we agreed that there was very good reason to go ahead.
Some people think that they have failed because they started smoking again, but Janice understood this was not true. The reason she started again was a very stressful situation, and this had nothing to do with her previous success. It can happen to anyone. It often does, in fact.
The emphasis in Janice’s case was not so much stopping smoking as staying stopped. Our Ealing hypnotherapist was able to build a long-term strategy into the session, but another difference now was that Janice knew to call us if anything went wrong. This was an important lesson for her – that things can go wrong, but that the worst thing you can do is to accept failure.
Acupuncture in Ealing
Daniel had had acupuncture before, for something unrelated to stopping smoking, and got on very well with it. So now he felt good about this application. Some potential acupuncture patients worry about needles, but Daniel knew that what we do in acupuncture isn’t like the kind of needles people usually think about. So when he saw our Ealing acupuncturist he was full of confidence.
Most patients stop smoking after the second session, and then come back for the third treatment just for a top-up. But Daniel actually stopped after the first treatment. He came for his top-up but skipped the third one. There is no need for a patient to attend all three appointments if they don’t need them. We held his third treatment over in case he had a problem, but he didn’t so our Ealing acupuncturist didn’t need to see him again.
TALK WITH OUR HYPNOTIST * FIRST
When you call us about hypnosis, or complete the enquiry form, we will contact you to discuss whether hypnotherapy is what you need. Once we are sure, we will have our Ealing hypnotist phone you. They are highly qualified, of course, but you will still want to see if you like them. Hypnotherapy is great, which is why we provide it, but your success will to some extent depend on your relationship with the hypnotherapist you see.
– or acupuncturist, as appropriate..
