A SHORT CASE HISTORY

Geoff wanted to be seen by our Stevenage hypnotist as soon as possible. We asked him what the hurry was, and he said it was his fortieth birthday coming up, and he had promised himself he would stop smoking before he was forty.
Luckily our Stevenage hypnotherapist was able to fit him in just three days later. Steve stopped smoking very easily in just one session of hypnotherapy. The question it raised for us was what triggers people to contact us. This isn’t the same as what motivates them to stop smoking. Most people want to stop. The more interesting question is why they don’t at any given time, and why they do at others.
The range of triggers our Stevenage hypnotherapist sees includes significant birthdays, the impending birth of a child or grandchild, a new relationship, moving house (don’t want it to smell), even a new car (for the same reason). These, and many others, are all reasonable triggers. The question they raise, though, is why any trigger is needed in the first place. To answer this, we have to ask why people don’t stop. Any Stevenage hypnotist would say the same thing – that smokers tend to have that moment of inspiration, when stopping becomes more important.
So the actual trigger might be important, or it might just be an excuse. This in itself begs the question we just asked: why isn’t the desire to be a non-smoker enough on its own? Well, we actually asked Geoff this question before he came for his hypnotherapy. We didn’t really expect him to know the answer, but surprisingly he did. He had tried to stop smoking many times before, with all the usual pharmaceutical products. He had even had hypnosis before, although he was a young man then and hadn’t taken it seriously (although he did stop for six months).
Geoff’s answer was that he had never wanted to stop smoking enough to overcome the difficulty. What that actually means is very complex, and we won’t go into it here. But for Geoff it did mean something, because he came to our Stevenage hypnotherapist and stopped straight away. It was the chicken and egg question, and so it had no real answer. Geoff just said it was his time to stop smoking, and that’s enough.

Myth number 4
Addiction doesn’t matter when you stop smoking
Of course it doesn’t. It doesn’t matter when you try to come off heroin either. Really, what nonsense this is, and it’s usually peddled by people who have a great theory about the psychology of drug taking and don’t want the facts to get in the way.
Alright then, if addiction doesn’t matter, why do you smoke? What is the fatal flaw in your character that forces you to use a drug that kills 300 Britons a day because you ‘enjoy’ it, or because it’s just a ‘habit’, or because you like to smoke when you drink? This is a bit early to be claiming insanity.
Am I saying that addiction is the sole reason you smoke? No, or haven’t you been paying attention? Addiction is the basis of all drug taking, but that addiction creates the psychological dependence on the delivery method for the drug. That’s not what I’m talking about right now, so let’s stick with the subject in hand.
If you don’t believe me, here’s some proof that addiction is what it’s about. Herbal cigarettes cost about half what tobacco ones cost, but people don’t smoke them. Well, excuse me, smoking is smoking (yes, I know they smell strange, but no stranger than tobacco to a non-addict). Why don’t people smoke them if they are so cheap, especially people who haven’t got much money? There is only one reason. Herbal cigarettes cannot deliver nicotine. Yes, they’re smoking, but smoking is not the point. Without the drug, a cigarette is of no interest to a smoker. You smoke cigarettes to get a fix. It’s that simple. Addiction isn’t the only reason you haven’t stopped smoking, but it is the only reason for the other reasons, if you see what I mean, which you will soon.
