Here is a very, very small taster:
Because I’ve tried and I can’t stop
Of course you can stop. I’ve already touched on this but come on, how can any sane person say they can’t STOP doing something? What you mean is you haven’t succeeded yet, but that’s not the same thing at all. What you have failed to do in the past has absolutely nothing to do with what you might achieve in the future. What that failure does, though, is convince you to stop trying, and it combines with all the other wrong beliefs to do this. Children say they can’t so they don’t want to but you are not a child. You are an intelligent adult and it is time to take responsibility. If you concede defeat now, you are giving the tobacco companies the right to destroy your life, and I won’t let you do that.
A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Cambridge hypnotherapy and acupuncture branches
We give you these two very brief stories to illustrate a couple of concerns many smokers have when we speak with them.
Gary had heard how good acupuncture is for stopping smoking, but when he rang us to ask about it he confessed to being averse to needles. This gave us a problem, because we know, of course, that what we use isn’t the same thing as needles as most people think of them. Gary, though, was hard to convince. As will be seen in the case below, we don’t push clients too hard, and for Gary we might well have backed off, but we had a problem. Despite his fear, he did want to stop smoking with acupuncture. How were we going to square this circle?
Well, we came up with a novel solution. Gary had a session with our hypnotherapist, to help him get over his worry about needles, then, the very next day, he came to see our acupuncturist in Cambridge. His fear had gone completely. He stopped smoking after the second treatment, having been quite a heavy smoker. He came back for the third treatment, even though he wasn’t smoking, because we do advise this. Strangely, our acupuncturist was surprised to hear from him that the reason he came back was because he enjoyed the experience so much!
Jonathan has stopped with acupuncture some three years before, and stayed stopped for more than two years. Nevertheless, now that he wanted to stop smoking again he had convinced himself that he needed to see our Cambridge hypnotist. This defies logic, but we couldn’t get him to understand that. He had succeeded. What he had then done was to go back to smoking, but that has nothing at all to do with stopping. Stopping smoking and staying stopped are two very different things. The logical thing for Gary was to do exactly what he did last time to stop, but with the addition of the support and counselling we provide, to help him to stay stopped. This is provided for three years, long enough for most people to know they are not going back to smoking.
Since he had set his mind against repeating what we considered his previous success, Jonathan came to our Cambridge hypnotherapist. As it turned out, he did very well, so no harm was done by his decision. Still, it went against our professional judgment. Having said that, ultimately the client has to feel that what are doing is right for them. Even if it’s for the wrong reason!
