There are two ways of knowing something (probably more than two for all I know) – you can have intellectual knowledge and then there is emotional knowledge. The logic that smoking is a bad thing is irrefutable and every smoker knows that, but every smoker’s brain is under the control of a drug that changes their perception of that knowledge, that makes it hard to FEEL that smoking is bad.
We do a lot of talking to smokers. I personally have spent many happy hours just talking to smokers even in the street, learning from them. What is so depressing is the overwhelming number who say they don’t want to stop, but accept they are on an addictive drug that is likely to be very bad for them. It’s like they are saying look, I’m talking nonsense and you and I both know that but let me just go on believing it.
This is the true impact of drug addiction, the human brain’s ability to know it is trapped but its inability to figure out that it matters. Smoking is irrational, but so is buying national lottery tickets. You know you’re not going to win but you still do it. Believing the unbelievable is an interesting human characteristic. We’ve got the biggest brains on the planet but we’re the only life form that goes bungee jumping.
Inevitably, the question, why do people keep smoking, is tied in with the fact that if you don’t keep smoking you have to stop, and is of course the subject of the next tutorials. When you think about it, you do what you want and you don’t do what you don’t want, and if you’re doing something that you stop wanting to do you stop doing it. It’s kind of simple. But stopping smoking becomes more than not doing something, it becomes doing something. The stopping becomes an active process.
