From our Evesham hypnotherapy branch

Sarah and her husband Mark came together, so this really a story of both of their successes. In actual fact that wasn’t quite what happened, because they were booked to be seen on the same day but Mark phone a few days before their appointment and changed his to the day after his wife’s therapy.

Sarah’s hypnotherapy in Evesham

As with many couples, it was the wife who called to make the booking. We always ask about the husband as well, because we don’t accept any client we haven’t spoken with first. Sarah gave the usual reason – Mark was at work and he had asked her to call. All we could do at this stage was assess Sarah’s own motivation, and check she was coming for the correct therapy. It’s easy for a couple to book for the same therapy, but it’s not always the case that what will suit one will suit the other.

As it happened Sarah was a classic case, and she stopped smoking very easily with our Evesham hypnotist. The only question that remained was whether Mark was going to support her. You would assume he would, since he was also going to stop, but it wasn’t that simple.

Mark’s hypnotherapy in Evesham

Despite his change of appointment, it turned out that Mark was motivated to stop smoking. But he had been motivated at least three times before, and having stopped had gone back to smoking. So the issue for him was maintaining his desire to be a non-smoker. And this came down, as it often does, to remembering why he had stopped in the first place. Believe it or not ex-smokers do sometimes forget. What seemed important before they do it becomes less so afterwards. They are usually, in this situation, influenced by friends, colleagues or relatives who smoke. Mark had a strong belief in socialising and drinking being really important to him. His circle of friends was almost exclusively other men who goaded each other on with drinking. So it was likely that the same would happen when he met up with them a few days after seeing our Evesham hypnotherapist, having stopped smoking more easily than he expected.

The bad news is that he gave in to peer pressure to smoke. The good news is that Sarah got really angry with him and made him promise to call the NSSC AfterCare service. He did that and we explored with him where he was going wrong. He then had a follow-up session of hypnosis, and this time he stayed away from his friends until the danger was over.

Sometimes, people come to us not to stop smoking but for smoking reduction. It’s a choice they make, and we publish a book on reduction. ‘No, You Don’t Have to Stop Smoking’ will be of interest even if you do want to stop completely. Why not take a look at it before you visit our Evesham hypnosis branch. Here is a taster to get you started.

Myth number 4: Addiction doesn’t matter when you stop smoking …

Of course it doesn’t. It doesn’t matter when you try to come off heroin either. Really, what nonsense this is, and it’s usually peddled by people who have a great theory about the psychology of drug taking and don’t want the facts to get in the way.

Alright then, if addiction doesn’t matter, why do you smoke? What is the fatal flaw in your character that forces you to use a drug that kills thousands of users every day worldwide because you ‘enjoy’ it, or because it’s just a ‘habit’, or because you like to smoke when you drink? This is a bit early to be claiming insanity.

Am I saying that addiction is the sole reason you smoke? No, or haven’t you been paying attention? Addiction is the basis of all drug taking, but that addiction creates the psychological dependence on the delivery method for the drug. That’s not what I’m talking about right now (although it is very much the subject of this book), so let’s stick with the matter in hand.

Hypnosis might not be what you’re looking for. If it isn’t, and you want to take pharmaceutical products to stop smoking, we suggest you see your GP.. You can also visit the NHS Smokefree website here.
