From our Walsall hypnotherapy branch

We can never be quite sure about any given smoker who calls us. We have a chat, which can be anything from a few minutes upwards, and we try to make the best judgment possible. This is so we can be sure we’re giving them the right help. Every case is different. When Chris called about hypnotherapy, he seemed at first to fit an average profile, but as the conversation went on we learned more. Chris’s problem, apart from smoking of course, was drink.

Alcohol and tobacco go together for many people, and so the subject comes up quite often for our Walsall hypnotist. The problem we often have is that people who own up to smoking often don’t own up to drinking. There’s nothing wrong with drinking, but there is something wrong to excessive drinking. That’s obvious, but what is also important is the relationship between smoking and drink. The two go together for all sort of reasons. There is usually no problem with helping someone who drinks moderately to stop smoking, but heavy drinkers do have a problem. And Chris wasn’t just a heavy drinker, he was a binge drinker.

Our hypnotherapist in Walsall is well used to clients with a drink problem, but the two issues combined require a careful approach. We’re not here to lecture clients, and we don’t do that with drinkers, but we do need to put some boundaries in place. Hypnotherapy can help with alcohol just as well as tobacco, but clients who come to us for smoking cessation usually want to restrict the hypnosis to that. Chris did.

That was his decision, of course, but on the other hand we couldn’t sweep it under the carpet. Our Walsall hypnotist is sensitive to these problems, but she couldn’t just ignore Chris’s drink issues. It’s a careful balance – making the client face the problem without accusing them of being alcoholic. In any case, there is no very good definition of alcoholism in our opinion. So what we did was to try and get Chris to deal with the smoking as if he was just like most other smokers – drinking normally. It didn’t really need to go further than that, because for all he didn’t want to discuss it with our hypnotist he knew himself it was an issue. As long as he did, we could hope he would behave accordingly.

Without going into a lot of detail, Chris actually did better than either he or we expected. So we were right to leave him to sort out the drinking. We’re not saying he stopped doing that. We are saying he was able to separate the two problems and deal with the smoking with the help of our Walsall hypnosis branch. And he found what a lot of clients find – that not smoking actually helped him to bring his drinking under more control.

Sometimes, people come to us not to stop smoking but for smoking reduction. It’s a choice they make. We publish a book on reduction. It’s called, No, You Don’t Have to Stop Smoking. You might be interested to read some of it before you visit our Walsall hypnosis branch. Here is a taster.

Myth number 1: Addiction happens because you like something so much you can’t stop using it …

How can this possibly be true? Look at typical addictive substances – tobacco, coffee and alcohol, for example. Take a child who has never had any of these and give them some. If the theory of lethal attraction is right, the child will want more straight away. In fact the first dose of any of these substances is unpleasant, even repellent. You may well remember that reaction yourself. I do. The child has to learn to like the taste of these things.

So the reason you are addicted to tobacco cannot possibly be because it’s so good you can’t stand the thought of not having it. You may well have developed a deep psychological dependence that tries to convince you that you do like the taste, but that is brainwashing and has nothing to do with what I’m talking about here, the physiological dependence on a substance. Just to be quite sure about this, consider whether any substance could be so nice you would be prepared to die for it.

So you and millions of other people know this but it’s so nice, well, you’ll just have to die rather than miss the enjoyment. I don’t think so. Clearly, addiction has nothing whatever to do with pleasure.

Hypnotherapy might not be what you’re looking for. If it isn’t, and you want to take pharmaceutical products to stop smoking, we suggest you see your GP.. You can also visit the NHS Walsall website here.
