NO, YOU DON'T HAVE TO STOP SMOKING
We help people to stop smoking, but we also help heavy smokers to become light smokers – IF THAT IS WHAT THEY WANT. We have a book on this subject, and there are lots of pages you can read for free. You might be interested to do this before you come to our Bridgnorth hypnotist. Here is a taster.
Cutting down is just as hard as stopping, so there’s no point
OK, let’s test this one for sanity. First, how would this idea work with, say, eating? It’s just as hard to eat less as to stop eating altogether. Um, no, I don’t think so.
Now let’s look at addiction. You are addicted to nicotine, and as you will learn in this book there is something called the addiction threshold, which is the minimum number of fixes you need each day to avoid withdrawal symptoms. If you smoke above the threshold, you don’t get symptoms, if you smoke below it you do. Cutting down to the threshold will not put you in withdrawal, so there is nothing hard about it, as far as addiction goes.
And now let’s look at psychological dependence, which is the belief that you can’t live without smoking, which causes you to be afraid of stopping, which is the single most potent factor that stops smokers trying to stop. It would be true to say that this fear, which is called the fear of success, could make it hard to cut down because you mistakenly imagine that cutting down is somehow connected with stopping and this creates a fear of even cutting down. So, yes, cutting down might be hard (and I emphasise might, and come to think of it this entire book is about making it easy to cut down, so on the one hand I accept it could be a problem but on the other hand I am going to stop it being a problem) but the statement was not that cutting down is hard but that it is just as hard as stopping, and this is patently not possible, because even if you are afraid of cutting down, once you have done it, without attempting to stop, you will appreciate the big difference between the two.
