A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Menai Bridge hypnotherapy branch
Most people probably suppose that every woman who smokes stops when she finds out she’s pregnant. It surprises us every time a young woman calls us for help with hypnotherapy, and the reason she’s phoning is that she has just learned she is pregnant.
Jody was 34, and expecting her first child, when she called about our Menai Bridge hypnotherapy service. One problem with women starting a family later in life is that they have a long history of smoking. Then suddenly, like Jody, smoking doesn’t look like rebelling, it looks like a mistake. Another problem we see regularly is that the mother wants to stop smoking but the father doesn’t! Jody said that if she stopped smoking her partner would. That sounds good, but it isn’t. He had, seemingly, considered seeing a hypnotherapist himself recently. In that case, now that Jody was stopping, why wasn’t he? Our Menai Bridge hypnotist would have preferred to work with them as a couple, but he just didn’t get it.
Could he not have been more supportive? In any case, Jody had to accept that she had to lead the way. She came to our hypnotherapist and stopped in one session, as expected. So, did her partner come for hypnotherapy then? Well, if he did have it it wasn’t with our Menai Bridge hypnotist.
The other problem we see a lot of is women who stop smoking in pregnancy but start again after the baby is born. You would think that having stopped they would need no motive to stay stopped. But it seems that a lot of women are stopping for the baby, but not for themselves. Of course there is another point here. They stop for their unborn baby, but they don’t stay stopped for their growing child. Having stopped with our Menai Bridge hypnotherapist, Jody did stay stopped. She called the AfterCare service a few months after the baby was born and told us she was never going to smoke again. And her partner? She didn’t mention him, and we didn’t ask.
NO, YOU DON'T HAVE TO STOP SMOKING
We help people to stop smoking, but we also help heavy smokers to become light smokers – IF THAT’S WHAT THEY WANT. We have a book about this, and there are pages you can read for free. You might be interested to do this before you come to our Menai Bridge hypnosis branch. Here is a taster.
….. I can tell you now the British Department of Health will label me a heretic for the ideas in this book but ask me if I care. They won’t like it because it contradicts the whole tobacco-control model, which is fixated on the number of smokers and ignores HOW MUCH people smoke. I know this is true (and so do you) because all they ever bang on about is the number of smokers.
Let’s say there are twelve million regular smokers in the UK (I’ll let you work this out for your own country) and that the average amount they smoke is 15 a day. I’m not saying this is necessarily true, but since no-one actually knows what the figure is I can get away with this assumption. 12,000,000 x 15 x 365 is 65,700,000,000, which is 65.7 billion cigarettes a year. Now let’s say ten percent of smokers stop; this will reduce the number cigarettes smoked by ten percent, and one assumes it will reduce the health impact nationally by ten percent.
Now let’s look at another scenario. Let’s say that all smokers in the UK reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke by ten percent. The effect is going to be the same (some health professionals might argue that cutting down doesn’t reduce health risks, but they are nincompoops).
TALK WITH OUR HYPNOTIST FIRST
When you enquire about hypnotherapy we will discuss whether it’s what you need. If it is, we will have our Menai Bridge hypnotist phone you, because you will still want to see if you like them. Hypnotherapy is great, which is why we provide it, but your success will also depend on your relationship with the hypnotherapist you see.
