A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Bridgend hypnotherapy branch
David came up with something that we do see from time to time. He had stopped smoking very easily with hypnosis almost three years earlier. That was the first point to note – that it had been easy. The second point was that when we asked him if he had been a happy non-smoker he said yes. Very much so.
This raised two issues for our Bridgend hypnotist. Why had David started smoking again if he had enjoyed not smoking? And why did he need help to stop again? Well, in fact everyone who stops smoking is happy about it. When did you ever meet anyone who regretted stopping smoking? So why had David started again? For the usual reasons. The question this raises is how anyone who is happy not smoking would take a cigarette from a friend over a few drinks.
Of all the smokers our Bridgend hypnotherapist sees, most have stopped before, some more than once. What this tells us is that something overrides the pleasure of not smoking at certain times. This something is a false memory. Everyone who stops smoking remembers that they used to enjoy it. This is false because smoking is not in fact enjoyable. Part of what hypnosis does is to help the client understand this. Most smokers understand it on the intellectual level, but our Bridgend hypnotherapist helped David to understand it on the emotional level. It is this emotional understanding that is critical to stopping smoking, and it’s what hypnotherapy is so good at.
Another issue for David is one we also see regularly. People who enjoyed not smoking are afraid of stopping again. We talk of fear as something very real for smokers. But it’s also real for people who start again. Their memory of not smoking is good, and yet they fear stopping again. This is because one of the effects of addiction is to create fear of not being addicted. This is called psychological dependence. And it’s the level our Bridgend hypnotist worked on with David. Breaking this irrational fear was what David needed, and again it’s what hypnotherapy is so good at.
NO, YOU DON'T HAVE TO STOP SMOKING
We help people to stop smoking, but we also help heavy smokers to become light smokers – IF THAT IS WHAT THEY WANT. We have a book on this subject, and there are lots of pages you can read for free. You might be interested to do this before you come to our Bridgend hypnosis branch. Here is a taster.
….. OK, now I have another target for this message, besides you, and the doom- mongers, and the other smokers. Actually it’s two targets. It’s the governments who depend on tax revenue from the sale of a lethal drug, and it’s the pharmaceutical companies who make a killing out of drugs that are supposed (and I emphasise supposed) to help solve the smoking problem.
Governments don’t want you to stop smoking. They say they do, because they need to be seen to be saying that, but they don’t. Take the British government for example. You pay tax on the cigarettes you buy, and the British government is dependent on that tax, so if you were the Chancellor of the Exchequer would you want people to stop paying that tax?
And you pay National Insurance contributions all your working life, and on average smokers die ten years younger than non-smokers, which means the Chancellor picks up your National Insurance contributions all your working life and then you conveniently go and die before he has to pay it back in pensions or healthcare costs (which are much higher in old age). Smokers are the perfect cash cow for the government, and they can convince themselves none of this is their problem because after all, no-one asks you to smoke, do they (they conveniently forget they have sanctioned the sale of an addictive drug at this point).
