A SHORT CASE HISTORY

From our Bournemouth hypnotherapy branch

Adam was susceptible to all the usual triggers for stopping smoking, apart of course from the fact that he simply needed to. Every smoker needs to stop, and yet they don’t, so are external triggers helpful? Each New Year, National No-Smoking Day and Stoptober, he had a go. And yet he never stopped for more than a few days, or weeks at best. We needed to look at why this was before we could go any further. We were happy to see him at our Bournemouth hypnosis branch, but only when he was ready. And being ready meant understanding why he kept failing.

This is not actually an issue that concerns most clients, which never fails to surprise us. How can you solve a problem if you don’t know what it is? Smokers, and medical people, simply assume that the problem is smoking, but it isn’t. If it were, it might be easier to resolve. Even the National Health Service’s drug products might work better if that were the only problem. If we were going to help Adam to stop smoking our starting point would have to be why he couldn’t succeed on his own. And part of the process of understanding that was to look at why he kept failing with the methods he tried. Most Bournemouth hypnotists help people to stop smoking, but the work we do is based on research done by the Doctor Richard Mackarness Foundation, and that has been going on for more than twenty years.

The key in Adam’s case was the fact that he was relying on external campaigns to get him motivated. This begs the question – why wasn’t he motivated enough without these campaigns? There is also another question, around what these campaigns actually mean. The two questions are connected. New Year is more or less a media-driven issue. Journalists still think that people make resolutions at this time, which is probably no longer true. One of the resolutions is supposedly to stop smoking. The problem here is that people have been trying to stop for so long now that the time of the year has become fairly irrelevant. Our hypnotherapist in Bournemouth doesn’t actually see more clients in January than at any other time.

The other two are real campaigns, but we need to look at who runs them. It is assumed this is the NHS but it isn’t. Stoptober especially is a drug company campaign. It’s designed to sell more pharmaceutical products. The problem with that is there are few people now who have not already tried to stop smoking with those products, so pushing more doesn’t actually amount to much of a campaign. Smokers need something new, not the same old thing. That was exactly why Adam was now thinking of coming to our Bournemouth hypnotist. He had finally realised that on each of the three annual occasions all he was doing was what he always did, and he wasn’t getting anywhere. It was only when he broke out of that repetitive pattern of failure that Adam had therapy, instead of taking drugs, and stopped smoking.

THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK

Here is a tiny snippet from the book. There are lots of pages you can read for free. Do this before you come to our Bournemouth hypnosis or acupuncture branch.

Acupuncture

If you had classical acupuncture (with needles) it probably helped for a while, but there is sometimes only a short-term effect, in which case go back and switch to auricular acupuncture (stud in the earlobe). If you are already on auricular and the studs have fallen off, go back and have them put back on.

If you are using auricular acupuncture and the effect is only limited, consider other tools, especially herbal cigar-ettes (see above for how to use them), because the acupuncture is probably helping with the withdrawal symptoms but it has no psychological component, which the herbal cigarettes will provide.
