THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK
Here’s a snippet from the book. There are lots of pages you can read for free. We suggest you do this before you come to our Bath hypnosis branch.
Nicotine replacement products
Are you finding it hard to use? This means the patch slips off or you react badly to it, the gum gives you stomach ache, or the inhalator burns your throat, whatever. In this case, is there any point? No.
So what if you’re using an NRP and it is at least not causing any problems? The next question is, what do you do if it isn’t satisfying the craving? Well, this depends on what you mean by craving. The function of an NRP is to feed you with nicotine, and that means, theoretically (definitely theoretically) that you won’t have any craving, but do we mean craving for nicotine or craving for a cigarette?
There is an easy way to find out, and this is really important, so do it. Go and buy some herbal cigarettes and, while using an NRP and when you have a strong craving, smoke one. If the craving subsides, it wasn’t a craving for the drug, it was a craving to smoke, in other words it was a psychological craving, which of course the NRP is not designed to satisfy.
Now try another experiment. Stop using the NRP for a day and just smoke the herbal cigarettes. If you still have a craving then you need both the drug (from the NRP) and the act of smoking (from the herbal cigarette), so use them together. If you don’t have a craving, then you should be able to come off the NRP altogether and just smoke a herbal cigarette from time to time. The need for these will rapidly diminish.
