THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK
Here’s a snippet from the book. There are lots of pages you can read for free. Do this before you come to our Bognor hypnosis or acupuncture branch.
The smoke-free day experiment.
People who are trying to stop smoking do a strange thing, in my opinion. They try to stop smoking. I mean, why? Especially since they usually fail, and then they are even more afraid to try again. Failure breeds failure. And with smokers it confirms what they always suspected, that they can’t stop.
You would be amazed at the number of people who have never tried to stop smoking, and I don’t mean people in their twenties, but people in their thirties and older, and they have never actually tried to stop. Why? Well, that question is answered in a number of parts in this Handbook, but for now I want to work with one reason – they don’t think they can.
This isn’t a good reason to keep smoking. It is self-evidently utterly defeatist. I don’t think I could climb Mount Everest so I don’t try. Now that is a reasonable way to think. Actually I don’t want to either, so that’s another reason, but let’s stick with I can’t so I don’t. The point, though, is that climbing Everest has no real benefit. It’s not, for example, going to save my life (it could of course do the opposite).
A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Bognor Regis hypnotherapy branch
Maurice was one of the oldest clients we have ever seen, at eighty-six. He had made a number of attempts to stop smoking over the long years, but none of them had been very serious. So why was he asking for our help now?
He wasn’t a very healthy man, but few men of his age are. It’s relative, of course, and he was no worse than the average eighty-six year old either. Were any of his complaints smoking related? It was hard to say. His GP had given up suggesting they might be, because GPs tend to have a cut-off age for smoking cessation. When Maurice rang us about seeing our Bognor hypnotherapist, his first question was whether we thought he was too old to stop smoking.
How can anyone be too old to stop smoking? What does it even mean? Well, for many doctors it means the patient has a lot of other health issues and smoking isn’t the priority. What they mean by that is that the patient doesn’t have many years left, which is true. But so what? Everyone is going to die of something, but if you don’t have emphysema our advice is to die of something else.
What was motivating Maurice to want to see our Bognor hypnotherapist? If it wasn’t a medical problem, and if his GP wasn’t pushing him to stop smoking, what was it? The answer came as a surprise to us. He wanted to stop for the sake of stopping. He had never actually liked smoking, and the fact that so many people now said at his age he shouldn’t worry about it had started to annoy him. He didn’t feel old, despite his aches and pains. He accepted those as the normal course, but he didn’t feel ‘too old’ for anything.
In fact what was motivating him was the fact that everyone was saying it didn’t matter. And in any case it wasn’t as if he had never thought of stopping. He had always known he should do it, but like many smokers had never tried very hard. So he booked himself in to our Bognor hypnotherapy branch but he didn’t tell anyone. He would tell his doctor after the event, and his family didn’t even ask.
Before he made his booking, though, he wanted to know if we, or any independent therapist, agreed with his view of all this. It was important to him to work with someone who sympathised with him. So he rang round a number of Bognor hypnotherapists and put the matter to each one. He was pleased to find that three out of four did agree with him, so it appears that the attitude of therapists is quite different from that of GPs. Which shouldn’t surprise us.
TALK WITH OUR HYPNOTIST * FIRST
When you enquire about hypnotherapy we will discuss whether it’s what you need. If it is, we will have our Bognor hypnotist phone you, because you will still want to see if you like them. Hypnotherapy is great, which is why we provide it, but your success will also depend on your relationship with the hypnotherapist you see.
