When you have seen our Hove hypnotherapist or acupuncturist, or you have Addiction Management, we will enrol you in our NSSC AfterCare programme. The support that comes with each therapy is different, although in each case it provides access to our unlimited help by telephone counselling.

Hove Hypnotherapy AfterCare

We will be looking after you for a full three years. If you make a mistake, or you think you might, don’t be afraid to call us. We never judge, and we have a great deal of experience.

Hove Acupuncture AfterCare

Because acupuncture is done in three sessions, we suggest you call us after each one (at the very least after the first). Acupuncture is what we call a single-discipline therapy, and we provide it as part of a package, because you will get the best result if we work with you between treatments, on the psychological issues as well. This is a three-year support package.

Addiction Management AfterCare

The support with AM is somewhat different. If you need more of your Tobacco Factor, this is provided at a small charge (see the fees here). Our phone support is available, though, for an unlimited time, which means for life.

Here is a small taster from the book. If you’re seeing our acupuncturist or hypnotherapist in Hove, we suggest you read the sample pages first.

Eliminate the things that might trip you up.

First, split people into smokers and non-smokers. The non-smokers are generally going to be encouraging or, at worst, disinterested. The ex-smokers among them are likely to give you all sorts of advice based on their own experience and I can tell you now that most of it will be unhelpful so try not to take any notice of it. No-one knows as much about stopping as an ex-smoker, and funnily enough the way they did it, which they will tell you all about whether you want to hear it or not, is not only the best way but the only way to do it. My advice is to avoid those conversations like the plague.

The smokers will themselves split into two groups, those who are helpful and those who aren’t. The ones who encourage you are hoping you will do it so they don’t have to, because this will assuage their conscience for carrying on. And then you get the unhelpful ones. Why are they unhelpful? Well, mostly, sadly, because they feel threatened by you stopping.

A smoker can be like an alcoholic, happy only with other alcoholics because people who don’t drink embarrass people who do. This camaraderie a lot of smokers think exists among smokers is nothing more than smokers protecting each other from having to face the truth. If you stop you are a deserter.

From our Hove hypnotherapy branch

Jenny and Patrick both wanted to stop smoking, and being married had always tried to stop together. That makes perfect sense, and it was surely the right way to go about it. Having said that, it can also have drawbacks. When one does well, it encourages the other, but if one falters it can affect the other too. And the motivation is rarely the same in two people, so that can be a problem also.

Another issue was that Jenny rang us first and said her husband would be coming too. And yet when our Hove hypnotherapist rang to speak with Jenny, and Patrick too, the latter wasn’t available. We won’t book anyone in for hypnosis until we’ve spoken with them, so that left our hypnotist in limbo. If she booked Jenny in without speaking with Patrick, there was a risk he might back out, but if she waited until he was available Jenny might cool off.

In the event she decided to book Jenny in. Would Patrick then call to arrange his session, or was he a lost cause? Jenny herself started to show some concern about this. She believed she needed her husband to come on the same day. There was nothing we could do about this; whatever was going on was between the two of them.

Our hypnotherapist in Hove kept a slot open for Patrick the same day as Jenny’s appointment as long as she could, but just as she was about to re-allocate the slot Patrick rang and booked himself in. We never know in these situations whether there is a genuine reason for the prevarication, or it’s a sign that the smoker has doubts. Having said that, we are different from most independent hypnotists. Most hypnotherapists will refuse to see a client who doesn’t show they are really serious. It’s too long a story to go into here, but in simple terms we know that almost everyone has doubts about stopping smoking. It’s why they are still smoking.

So Jenny and Patrick came to our Hove hypnosis branch on the same day; her in the morning and him in the afternoon. At this branch we see each client twice, about a week apart, and we take the opportunity this presents to speak with the clients between the two sessions. And guess what. We got through to Jenny all right, and she was doing fine, but Patrick wasn’t available. We left a message for him but he didn’t get back to us. It was looking like our first instincts had been right, that Patrick had not been fully motivated.

We were wrong though. Even though he didn’t return our call, he did come along for his second session with our Hove hypnotist. He hadn’t understood the importance of speaking with us, and was just doing this his way. Well, we have our own way of doing things, but at the end of the day a successful client is a happy client, which they both were.

Some people want to take drug products to stop smoking. If you prefer that to hypnotherapy or acupuncture, see your GP.. You can also visit the Brighton and Hove City Council website here.
