THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK
Here is a small taster from the book. If you’re seeing our acupuncturist or hypnotherapist in Lancaster, read the free sample pages first.
….. Seriously, if you find you are having quite severe mental symptoms which are resolved by a cigarette, try this little experiment instead of smoking. Breathe a few times into a bag. This will raise your carbon monoxide level, which will mimic what happens when you smoke. If it works, do this from time to time, until you no longer need it.
We sometimes tell patients that if they have one day of detox for each year they have smoked that would not be unreasonable, and they tend to agree, but in practice it rarely does take that long. The only exception I have noticed, in addition to my colleague Dr Freed’s comments above, is that very occasionally a patient will develop an allergy, to anything, after stopping. This appears to be a reaction caused by the immune system being strengthened by stopping smoking. It’s a paradox that hasn’t, unfortunately, yet been properly researched.
And by the way, we sometimes have patients saying they have been told that stopping smoking, especially if you are a heavy smoker, can be a great strain on the body. Stuff and nonsense. Well, alright, there are major changes and the body will take some time to get used to not being abused, but that’s the point. Not smoking can only ever be easier on your body than smoking, no matter how sudden the change.
