A SHORT CASE HISTORY

David had ‘done everything’. What he actually meant was he had tried every smoking cessation drug. He hadn’t had therapy, which means acupuncture and hypnotherapy. It surprises us, still, how many smokers say they have tried everything, when they haven’t had any therapy. It’s a mindset that comes from the NHS smoking cessation model. Therapy isn’t a part of that model.
But there was something that came out in our preliminary conversation with him that rang alarm bells. Before we would book him in with our Knutsford hypnotist, we said, there was one thing we would like him to try. He hesitated, because he just wanted to have the hypnosis as soon as possible. But we explained that if he did this one thing he might be able to save the cost of hypnotherapy. OK, he said, that’s worth a go.
The thing that triggered this thought for us was that he had actually stopped smoking perfectly well twice. The second time it was for over six months. So why did he start again? That, of course, is a question we usually ask. He didn’t know, except that he said he never stopped wanting to smoke. Was he around other smokers? This means in his home, at work, or socially. No, not often enough to matter.
So before we booked him to see our Knutsford hypnotist, we got him to try an experiment. If we were right, he wouldn’t need to come. If we weren’t, we would know within a week. All we wanted him to do was stop smoking …. AND stop eating tomatoes. There was silence on the phone while he tried to take this in, but he couldn’t. It still shocks us how many people have been through the gamut of NHS stop-smoking products and not been told this. And yet it’s basic medical science. The tomato plant and the tobacco plant are relatives. This means they contain common molecules. And that means that when you stop smoking, but eat tomato, that can trigger a craving for tobacco.
We thought David might reject this idea and demand to come to our Knutsford hypnotherapist, but after he thought about it he said he would try it. Why not? He had never heard about this before, but it made so much sense he couldn’t ignore it. He grew tomatoes in his greenhouse, so he actually ate them quite a lot. We went on to explain that even if he did have hypnotherapy, but ate tomatoes, that could undo the work of the therapist, so whether he came to us or not he needed to know this.
So what happened? Well, perhaps because he had failed so many times before he failed again. It didn’t matter, though, because he was so grateful for this one bit of information that he didn’t hesitate to book to see our Knutsford hypnotist, and passed with flying colours.

What you need to know about smoking & eating.
You’re probably thinking this tutorial is going to tell you how not to put weight on when you stop smoking.
Well, yes, of course I’m going to be talking about that, but believe me there’s a lot more to this subject than weight gain. Smoking and eating are closely connected, in more ways than you think, so even if you’re not worried about your weight don’t skip this tutorial, will you?
Alright, first things first, why do people put on weight when they stop smoking? For the same reason they put on weight when they do anything else – because they are eating too much. It’s not complicated; the more you eat the heavier you get, and the less you burn the heavier you get. If you put eighty litres of petrol in your car it gets heavier. I don’t know what eighty litres of petrol weighs but I expect it’s not something you would want to carry around all day. As you burn that petrol the car gets lighter. You need the petrol in order to run the car, but there is a weight-to-power formula for every car. Likewise for every person. You eat and get heavier. If you don’t burn that food you stay heavier. The difference between a car and a person is that you can’t keep stuffing a car.
So, why do people eat too much when they are stopping smoking? I wish I had a pound for every smoker who has told me it was because they needed something to do with their hands. Really, what silliness this is. Something to do with their hands? I can think of, let’s say, five thousand things they could do with their hands that don’t involve stuffing their faces.
