A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Durham hypnotherapy branch
John was a pipe smoker. He had, of course, heard about hypnotherapy for stopping smoking, but he called us to ask if it works as well for people who smoke a pipe. The short answer was yes. It didn’t actually matter what he was smoking. That also includes people who smoke joints. It’s not the substance that matters.
However, there is an issue with pipe smoking that our Durham hypnotherapist had to take into account from the beginning. People who smoke ready-made cigarettes just take one out of a pack without thinking about it. Those who roll their own have an extra issue, which is the ritual of the hand rolling. And people like John, who have smoked a pipe for years, are habituated to the rituals around the pipe. Indeed the pipe is almost as much an issue as the tobacco they smoke in it. This is not to deny the importance of addiction to nicotine though. The point here is the things people do with pipes are not in themselves important, even though they appear to be. What happens is that the pipe stuff tells the brain that a fix of nicotine is on the way. Our Durham hypnotist discussed this with John, and he got the point. He had never thought about it before, and his GP had never mentioned it when prescribing smoking cessation products. But he could see straight away that it made sense. It actually filled in the gaps in his own understanding of why he couldn’t stop smoking.
This raises the point that a lot of people believe, wrongly, that the habit is a problem in smoking cessation. We find even doctors believe this. Habit has nothing to do with it. Everything comes down to the addiction. Some people think that hypnosis means that smokers are not addicted, because it’s a psychological therapy, but that misses the point. Yes, John had a strong relationship with his pipe, but it wasn’t enough to keep him smoking. That was something else. What our Durham hypnotherapist had to do was use the power of his subconscious mind to ignore the feelings of withdrawal from nicotine. And because she achieved that John didn’t need his pipe.
As he himself said, if his pipe had been the issue he could have tended to it, even filled it with tobacco, even he supposed suck on it if he thought that would help. But it wouldn’t. You cannot get a fix of nicotine from raw tobacco, because you are addicted to burned tobacco, which is completely different in chemical composition. Let alone could the action of cleaning and refilling a pipe satisfy the craving. All Durham hypnotists are aware of these issues, we would hope. If not, we venture to suggest it’s what sets NSSC hypnotherapists apart.
THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK
Here is a small taster from the book. If you are going to come to our Durham hypnotherapist or acupuncturist, read some free sample pages first.
How smoking makes you believe it relaxes you.
Here’s a typical scene from a three-part British television crime drama:
In the first episode, the police keep finding bodies and getting frustrated that they can’t solve the crimes. In the second episode they arrest a man and go to the pub because it’s all over, even though you know it’s not because this is only part two so there must be more. Then, in the third episode, they find a particularly gruesome murder. Cut to the back of the police station. The Inspector is on the fire escape, smoking. The Sergeant comes out to have one himself.
‘Oh, hello Guv’nor. Smoking eh? I thought you’d packed it up.’
‘Yes Bill, but after that last body, well, …..’
Yes, the Sergeant knows what he means. It’s enough to make anyone start smoking again. He and the Inspector commiserate with each other and enjoy a nice relaxing smoke. The poor dears. They’ve been through a lot.
Alright, so what exactly is going on here? What is the scriptwriter telling us? That they are especially stressed. Stressed enough to start smoking again. Smoking is writers’ shorthand for stress. It’s not until you see a policeman, or a single mother whose child is missing, or even a doctor who has just lost a patient, that you appreciate the terrible stress they are under. And when you see them smoking, you know immediately.
TALK WITH OUR HYPNOTIST * FIRST
When you call us about hypnosis, or complete the enquiry form, we will contact you to discuss whether hypnotherapy is what you need. Once we are sure, we will have our Durham hypnotist phone you. She is highly qualified, of course, but you will still want to see if you like her. Hypnotherapy is great, which is why we provide it, but your success will to some extent depend on your relationship with the hypnotherapist you see.
