THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK
Here is a small taster from the book. If you are going to come to our hypnotherapist in Redcar, read some of the free sample pages first.
….. Every time you put a cigarette out your nicotine level drops, until it reaches the trigger that makes you smoke. That trigger, like hunger and thirst, is registered as unpleasant. Inevitably, therefore, when you get a fix and the withdrawal goes away, your poor old brain interprets this as pleasure. Of course, it is nothing of the kind. If you didn’t have the displeasure, you wouldn’t need the pleasure.
Hold on, though, surely I’m not saying there is no such thing as a pleasant smoke? That’s going too far, isn’t it? Well, it depends on what you mean by pleasure. If you with a glass of wine in your hand and good friends around you, you are already in a state of pleasure. If they all light up and so do you, and it’s been an hour or two since you smoked so you are in subliminal nicotine deprivation, it’s not hard to guess that the cigarette is going to be good.
If, on the other hand, you have a cold and your wife has just sent you outside the back door in February because you want to smoke, I strongly suspect that, even with the same level of nicotine deprivation, that cigarette is not going to be a huge pleasure. In other words. much of the pleasure of smoking is situation-dependent. If you are already enjoying yourself, it is easier to enjoy a cigarette. Is it any different from the contrast between a cream cake with a perfect cup of coffee in a cosy tea-room in front of a log fire, or that same cream cake in a tent with the rain dripping down your neck when you take the children camping?
