A SHORT CASE HISTORY

From our PInner hypnotherapy branch

Simon had a long history of trying to stop smoking. This included all the usual nicotine replacement products, as well as Champix. This latter is a psychotropic drug that GPs still prescribe.

He had spoken with more than one independent hypnotherapist in Pinner before calling us. These conversations hadn’t answered all his questions, so he wanted to know what we could do for him. He wanted to know if we were different. Well, yes we are.

His questions were not in fact unusual ones. Any smoker seeing our Pinner hypnotist would ask much the same. First, he wanted to know if hypnosis was in fact what he needed. Because we provide other smoking cessation therapies, we don’t simply assume hypnotherapy is what clients need. We were able to assess his stop-smoking issues on the phone before he even got as far as speaking with our hypnotist in Pinner.

So what were Simon’s issues? Actually, he wasn’t quite sure of them himself. Fortunately, our helpline staff are trained to ask the right questions. These alone will often help the smoker to understand their own problems. We find in most cases that smokers just don’t know what they can’t stop. Simon believed he wanted hypnotherapy, but he didn’t understand why, what our Pinner hypnotherapist was going to do for him. So the first thing we need to do was to find our why he kept failing, and see in hypnosis solves these problems. In his case, the answer was almost certainly yes.

What became clear was that Simon has quite a deep-rooted fear of stopping smoking. This fear is far more common the most smokers believe. It is also much more common that most GPs understand when they prescribe smoking cessation drugs. And of course the fear is exactly what our Pinner hypnosis service is so good at resolving. (And by the way, it’s called fear of success – the fear of never smoking again.)

This wasn’t, though, Simon’s only problem. The effect of trying with different NHS products, and failing, was that he had come to believe he couldn’t stop. And this, in turn, made him believe that perhaps he didn’t want to stop. So we could see he was suffering form a range of interconnected problems. What our Pinner hypnotist was going to have to do was unravel these issues and address each one in turn. She is very experienced at doing just this, and the therapy was a complete success.

Simon was surprised at just how well it went. His experience with his GP had really not helped. And then talking to independent hypnotists in Pinner had made matters worse. A calm, rational, professional approach solved his various problems one by one. There never was any doubt, really, that he was going to succeed.
