THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK

Before seeing our Ealing acupuncturist, it might help to read the free sample pages on our website.
Here is a very small taster:

….. People regularly say to us, when they discuss their previous attempts to stop, before coming to us, that they reckon the reason they failed was because they didn’t try hard enough, they weren’t serious about it, it was the wrong time to try. They are almost entirely right. What they haven’t understood is why all of these things. It’s never going to be the right time to stop smoking, so frankly it might as well be now. It’s only the wrong time because you don’t know how to do it. When you do know how to do it, when you understand the issues, it will be the right time.

Now let me give you an example of someone who did the opposite. She was a journalist, doing the Phoenix Programme for a newspaper article she was writing about it. We reckoned she wasn’t serious about stopping smoking, that she would write the piece and then forget all about it, but we underestimated her.

She called on day two of the programme (a requirement of all patients) and said that while she had been at the clinic her father had had a stroke. She learned about it when she left, and rushed to the hospital. Now, you know as well as I do that most people would say oh well this is certainly the wrong time to stop smoking but no, she said she didn’t smoke. She had taken on board the correct belief that smoking was not going to help her or her father. We were impressed.

She rang a few days later and told us her father had died. We said the appropriate things and then asked did that mean she had started smoking again? Oh no, she said, I came to you the day he had the stroke. My not smoking will be dedicated to his memory. If we were impressed before, what do you think we felt now? It was simply brilliant. She could so easily have used her father’s death as an excuse to fail, but instead she used it as a reason to succeed.
