THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK

Here is a very small taster:

….. The vast majority of people smoking right now refuse even to contemplate stopping, and it’s because of this fear. Why would anyone say anything as barmy as I want to carry on using this product that gives people cancer because I enjoy it? Come on. It’s not remotely rational and they know it and so do you. So what makes them say it? The addiction? No, although as you know it’s what made all this possible. It’s because they believe the unbelievable. Tobacco rules you by tyranny. It is killing you and you know that and it knows you know but it also knows you won’t come off it because you don’t think your life would be worth living without it.

It is the completely irrational belief that they couldn’t live without it that keeps most people smoking, and stops them even trying to stop. And there is an interesting reason why this is such a problem for so many people, something you may not have thought of.

If you have never managed to stop smoking, and let’s say you started when you were sixteen, which is pretty typical, you have never been an adult who doesn’t smoke. You don’t know what it’s like to be an adult who doesn’t smoke. And all humans have a fear of new experiences. They imagine the worst and avoid the experience if possible. You will avoid stopping smoking for many reasons, but one of them is simply that you have never done it. The fear of the unknown is a powerful disincentive and, if you have never stopped smoking before, you have it.

The funny thing is that all around you are people who don’t smoke, people who used to and have stopped, and that should prove to you that life without smoking is amazingly similar to life with smoking. But it doesn’t.
