Our acupuncturist in Islington is Juliet Burns, who also sees patients at our City of London acupuncture branch.

“I found Juliet very gentle and kind and so I felt I could put my trust in her. She was very easy to talk to and I felt she was an understanding person, and competent at what she was doing. I felt lucky to have her as my acupuncturist. I will  definitely recommend the NSSC Islington acupuncture service to my friends, as the support service was also really helpful.” SL, London SW3

When you have seen our Islington hypnotherapist or acupuncturist we will enrol you in our NSSC AfterCare programme. The support that comes with each therapy is different, although in each case it provides access to our unlimited help by telephone counselling..

Islington Hypnotherapy AfterCare

This gives three years of support. We want you to call the helpdesk the day after your session. If you need more help, this will now kick in. A free follow-up session with our Islington hypnotist is included, within three months.

Islington Acupuncture AfterCare

You will be getting three years of counselling and support with acupuncture. In addition to the long-term support, we like to talk with you after the first treatment. This is to assess your progress and ensure that our Islington acupuncturist has feedback to prepare for your second treatment.

Here’s a taster:

….. It is not, clearly, a normal relationship in the world of business. A company that knowingly sold a product that killed a consumer, I mean A consumer, not 300 a day in the UK alone, would be charged with corporate manslaughter. Tobacco companies not only kill their customers but they even tell them they’re going to do it. That, by the way, is a very clever trick on the part of the government. The health warning on the pack enables the pushers to claim that they warned you but you still bought it out of free choice, so you can’t have a claim against them in the courts. The government, bless them, by making health warnings on cigarette packs compulsory, did the manufacturers a huge favour in protecting them from their victims. They’re not as daft as they look, are they?

And the real issue here is that the pushers say you have a free choice about using the product. It’s like a man who abuses his wife saying she can always leave him, knowing she’s too scared to do that. Because dependence is actually very very serious. It means much more than you might think. It means that tobacco has control of you. A lot of smokers say they know this but actually even they, the honest ones, don’t realise how serious that control is. Because, obviously, if they did, they would do something about it. The sad thing is that a lot of smokers, the young ones, have no idea what’s being done to them, that they are selling their souls to the tobacco companies. They might think they are rebelling by smoking when everyone tells them not to, but actually they’re doing exactly the opposite, they’re doing precisely what a group of multinational corporations want them to do.

From our Islington hypnotherapy and acupuncture branches

When you help as many smokers as we do, you see that most clients have similar issues. Stopping smoking is not in fact all that complicated. There are two issues from which all others stem: addiction and psychological dependence. Briefly, the former is the body’s physical need for a substance, in this case nicotine, and the latter the belief that you can’t stop smoking, or that you can’t live without it. Both of those are created by the addiction.

All of the smokers who come to our Islington hypnotherapy or acupuncture branch fit somewhere in that equation. Our job is to assess exactly what their individual problems are with stopping smoking, and therefore which technique we need to apply to resolve them. It sounds simple (in which case why can’t the NHS do it, but that’s another matter) but then along comes someone who makes us question our own expertise. Maurice was one such.

When he called our national advice service, he really didn’t know what he need to do. He was clearly ready to accept our advice, but before we could offer that we needed to know what he couldn’t quit smoking. The problem was, he didn’t know. In fact a lot of smokers don’t know whey they can’t stop. This applied to Maurice, partly because he had never actually thought about it. And the reason for that was that each time he went to his GP for smoking cessation help his doctor didn’t ask the question.

This still shocks us, even though it shouldn’t. Anyone who ask us about acupuncture or hypnosis in Islington is going to have to answer some questions before we will offer either. It can actually be quite hard to get the smoker to think about why they can’t stop. Part of the reason for this is that they have done what Maurice had, tried everything the GP offers, this adds to the confusion. It’s even worse when they have read one of the many books that claim the reason people smoke is all in the mind. That there is ‘no such thing as addiction’. These books are written by people who are either genuinely ignorant, or have something to sell that they could,’t sell if the had to tell the truth.

The fact was the Maurice, like all smokers, was addicted to nicotine AND psychologically dependent on smoking as a result. He needed to understand that before he could decide whether he was going to see our acupuncturist in Islington or our hypnotherapist. Ultimately it is always the client’s decision, but we do insist on having input to that. And we will not provide a therapy which we know is definitely not indicated, just because that’s what the smoker thinks they need.

Maurice realised that despite his addiction to nicotine the best approach was to work on his psychological dependence, so he should come to our Islington hypnotist to stop smoking. He did that, and didn’t regret it. What he regretted was all the wasted years doing to wrong thing, just because no-one had ever asked why he couldn’t stop smoking. That question was the key to his success, not throwing different solutions at a problem he didn’t understand.

If you’re not looking for acupuncture or hypnosis, we suggest you see your GP.. You can also visit the Islington Stop Smoking Service website here.
