A SHORT CASE HISTORY

From our High Wycombe hypnotherapy branch

Most of the cases we deal with are quite similar, because the issues involved in stopping smoking are not very varied. Everyone who smokes is addicted to nicotine, and has some level of psychological dependence because of it. Whether we provide hypnotherapy or acupuncture depends partly on what their specific issues are, but also on what kind of individual they are.

Maggie was like most other smokers, but she was also different in one specific. When she called us about coming to see our High Wycombe hypnotherapist, she responded to our questions in much the same way as most smokers. But there was one question she answered in a surprising way. Most smokers say they enjoy smoking, until we challenge them, and then they admit they don’t. What they enjoy is the relief it brings, but that’s not the real thing. Some people even make a point that they hate it. Maggie couldn’t wait to tell us that she loved smoking though.

This raised a serious question. Most High Wycombe hypnotists, faced with this, would say go away and come back when you are ready to stop smoking. But they would be wrong, and they wouldn’t be helping Maggie with that attitude. The first question we asked ourselves was why she was calling us about stopping smoking if she loved it so much. Clearly she recognised, on some level, that she needed to stop. So was she saying she needed to but she didn’t want to? Well, that depends on what we mean by ‘want’. Almost every smoker knows they need to stop, so why don’t they? Why don’t most even try? Because there is a balance between need and want. And that balance is little understood.

People stop smoking because they need to, not because they want to. Maggie told our High Wycombe hypnotist she wanted to stop, but that surely contradicted her statement that she loved smoking. Hence her confusion. It’s easy to say you want something, but more often than not that means you need it so you must want it. Very few smokers understand what ‘want’ means, and few doctors or smoking cessation nurses have this kind of training.

There were two things Maggie hadn’t understood. One was that she was thinking incorrectly about wanting. Had she focussed solely on the rightness of stopping, she would have understood that it was what she wanted. But she couldn’t do that because she still believed she ‘loved’ smoking. Before she came to our High Wycombe hypnosis branch, we had a long talk with her about addiction, and how it made her believe, wrongly, that she enjoyed smoking. She wasn’t sure, but she gave us the benefit of the doubt. From this basis, our High Wycombe hypnotherapist was able to work on changing the way she saw smoking. Maggie came to understand that she was just like any other addict, and that she couldn’t believe what the drug was telling her. That was how she successfully stopped believing in smoking.

THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK

Prior to seeing our High Wycombe hypnotherapist or acupuncturist , read the sample pages on our website.
Here is a very small taster:

….. Now I want to come to something you may never have thought of. You have a relationship with tobacco. You have unthinkingly accepted that relationship and I think you might even have had some inkling that it is a relationship, because there have been times when it’s been good and times when it has been bad. But smoking isn’t something you just do. From now on, I want you to consider yourself to be in this relationship, and I want you to question whether it’s a good one. I have known smokers leave a partner rather than stop smoking, so clearly this relationship goes pretty deep.

The point is that it’s a relationship of abuse. And it’s a classic abusive relationship, in which tobacco hurts you and at the same time it makes you afraid to leave it. If you are going to stop smoking (and you are), you are going to have to take control of this relationship. From now on, you need to see tobacco (not smoking) as your enemy, and yourself as its victim. You need a new attitude, don’t you? You need to stand up for yourself.

Would you let anyone else treat you this way
