A SHORT CASE HISTORY

From our Bletchley hypnotherapy branch

Why do some people make an appointment with our Bletchley hypnotherapist, and then change their mind? John did, and the reason he gave was too transparent to be true. At least he rang to cancel. Some people make an appointment and just don’t show up. This costs us a lot of money, and no-one would ever suggest it is acceptable, so why do they do it? It’s not the subject of this case history, so let’s just say that if someone IS going to change their mind, they might feel embarrassed to tell us.

Anyway, John booked with our Bletchley hypnotist, and then only a day later he sent a text message to cancel. That alone tells us something. He was also embarrassed to actually speak with us. There was some vague suggestion of calling again to make another appointment, but would he? Actually, he did, just a week after that. Would he keep his appointment? Yes, he did, and indeed he stopped smoking after just one session of hypnosis. We would never know if his cancellation was for a genuine reason, but we doubted it, and it’s instructive to look here at the possible reasons.

Of all the smokers who book with our Bletchley hypnotist, about one in ten doesn’t go ahead, at least not straight away. Very few of these people will have a genuine reason. Almost all simply change their mind. And this, we consider, is a failure on our part. Why is that? Isn’t it up to the smoker to make up their mind about hypnosis?

Well, yes and no. But our starting point is that almost everyone who comes to us is in conflict. At the time they call us they feel ready, but that feeling doesn’t always last. If we are going to take responsibility for helping them even before our Bletchley hypnotherapist sees them, what can we do? It’s limited, but having faith in us as a service provider is a big part of it. So maintaining high professional standards, and being transparent about that, helps. It certainly helped with John. We know that because he told us as much. He had previously done the same with another, independent hypnotist – made an appointment and then cancelled it, permanently in that case.

We also advised John to watch our videos before coming to see our Bletchley hypnotist, which he did. This helped him to understand his smoking better, and it also helped him to prepare for his hypnotherapy. But perhaps most importantly it reassured him that he was coming to an organisation that really knows about this subject, because smoking cessation is all we do.

THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK

Before seeing our Bletchley acupuncturist or hypnotherapist, you should read the free sample pages on our website.
Here is a very small taster:

….. You begin to get the idea from the way I explain things that smoking is a war between you and the tobacco companies. So, if you are going to stop smoking you are going to have to accept three things:

You have the wrong attitude.

That attitude was created by your addiction to nicotine.

It is a deliberate tactic by the tobacco companies to keep your money coming in.

Now, what can you do about this? How can you take on the tobacco companies and win? How can you get back control of your life?

It’s simple. The only person who is afraid to stop smoking is a smoker. Non-smokers aren’t afraid, are they? Why? Because they aren’t addicted, so they have control of the way they see tobacco. Therefore, love it or hate it, if you become a non-smoker you will start to see tobacco differently and you will suddenly find it was what you wanted all along. That you used to think the wrong way because you were being manipulated, but that is over, and you have won back your freedom.

Take on that challenge, even if right now you don’t see it. After all, what do you have to lose? If you say to yourself I’m not a hundred percent sure I want to stop but I accept that’s because tobacco is controlling me so I’ll stop anyway and then decide if I want to start again, what do you have to lose? It’s scary, I know, but think about it.
