A SHORT CASE HISTORY
From our Bracknell hypnotherapy branch
There was only one reason Beverley contacted us abut hypnosis to stop smoking. She was due to have an operation, and she couldn’t have a general anaesthetic if she was smoking. She had made a number of attempts to stop before, but there had never been a good enough reason to succeed. Well, Beverley was almost sixty, and better late than never.
Before we could book her in to see our Bracknell hypnotist, though, we wanted to have a conversation with her about her motivation. No, we shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth. If she wanted to stop now, for whatever reason, that should be enough. The last thing we wanted to do was put her off stopping, but we wanted to talk to her about staying stopped. If the operation was the reason for really stopping now, what was she going to do afterwards? There would be no reason to stay stopped, would there?
Our hypnotherapist in Bracknell sees clients with a wide range of motives for stopping smoking. Health is the main one, even if clients are a little vague about the specifics of that. Money often comes up as an issue, although millions of people spend a great deal of money on smoking and they just keep doing it even so. Then there are the very specific reasons, like Beverley’s operation. The birth of a child or a grandchild can often trigger the motivation. But those events tend to be short-lived reasons for stopping. Every hypnotist sees clients who give any and all of these reasons for stopping, and yet this begs a question. If there is a good enough reasons for stopping, why do people seek help (from a hypnotherapist or anyone else)? Why isn’t motivation enough on its own? The answer is that very often it is. Every day people stop smoking without drug products, acupuncture or hypnosis. In fact far more stop on their own than stop with any of these methods. For them, their motivation is enough to overcome the difficulty.
Beverley wanted to come to our Bracknell hypnosis service for an interesting reason. She had a new and important reason for stopping, but she no longer believed in doing it on her own. How many people pay for hypnotherapy or use the NHS’s drug products, when they could stop on their own if they believed they could? Could Beverley have stopped on her own, given the right support, without hypnotherapy? We cannot know the answer to that. It’s an interesting question, but does it really matter?
THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK
Before seeing our Bracknell hypnotherapist, you could read the sample pages on our website.
Here’s a very small taster:
Fascinating Fact Number 3
The tobacco companies can almost certainly manufacture cigarettes that don’t contain nicotine but they don’t. Why not? Surely it would be better? No, there would be no point, because if tobacco didn’t contain nicotine no-one would smoke it. They know why people smoke – to get the drug. Taking the nicotine out would simply render smoking completely pointless, and their market would vanish.
