THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK

Here is a very small taster:
People don’t like change. You might want to move house but where you live now has the advantage of being comfortable, if only because you know it so well. People don’t like relationships to split up in part because it means upheaval and while it’s not my subject I’m quite sure some people stay in a bad relationship for that reason.
There’s no such thing as an adult smoker who thinks that what they are doing makes sense, or is right, so what we’ve got in the UK alone is 14 million people who are doing something they know is wrong. I don’t mean wrong like breaking the speed limit which is illegal and morally wrong, but wrong solely in that it is self-harm. Now it is possible that these 14 million people have something wrong with their brains that makes them do this but I doubt it. And yet, in a way, they do have something wrong with their brains. Your brain is under the influence of an addictive drug, and it’s also under the influence of a society that says that’s OK (it must be, because that society condones its sale and consumption).
So if 14 million smokers all have something in common that makes them keep doing something they can’t defend, and it’s not insanity, what is it? Well, here’s a clue. It’s got something to do with cigarettes.
OTHER BRACKLEY STOP SMOKING RESOURCES
Hypnotherapy might not be what you’re looking for. If it isn’t, and you want to take pharmaceutical products to stop smoking, we suggest you see your GP.. You can also visit the NHS Smokefree website here.
