A SHORT CASE HISTORY

From our Wakefield hypnotherapy branch

Chris found us by mistake. It happens quite a lot. People look for information on help to stop smoking, and come across us. They hadn’t realised there is a national provider of smoking cessation therapy perhaps. Or they ask their GP, who, for some reason we have never been able to understand, gives them our details. The reason this is confusing is that GPs are paid to prescribe smoking cessation drugs, not refer for therapy. We have always assumed this is a mistake by doctors. Still, it’s a mistake that works in the favour of patients.

Chris hadn’t even thought of hypnosis, and he had never considered coming to our Wakefield hypnotherapy branch. He had assumed that what the National Health Service says, that the best way to stop smoking is to take more nicotine, must be true. Obviously it isn’t, but he had just never thought about it. Like most people, he believed that what GPs say is true, by definition.

So why don’t NHS doctors refer patient for hypnosis to stop smoking? Why does no Wakefield GP tell patients about hypnotists in Wakefield? No, it’s not a conspiracy, it’s just business. General practices are private businesses that provide a service to the public, paid for by the NHS. They provide what the NHS tells them to provide. And that is what the pharmaceutical companies contract to provide. When you look at it like that, it seems perfectly normal. Except for one problem. The health of the nation does not lend itself to profit. Selling drug products to the public through general practices has this one fatal flaw, and we do mean fatal. Chris had been prescribed these products by his doctor, and had never stopped smoking. Not stopping gives the drug companies a chance to sell more product. If GPs refer patients to Wakefield hypnotists, those companies sell less product, and doctors lose out on NHS payments. Why would they do that?

Which brings us back to the question: why did Chris’s doctor advise him to call us? Well we suspect that busy GPs don’t have time to think about this. They just see, somewhere, perhaps online, National Stop Smoking Centres, and don’t realise we provide hypnotherapy. It gets the patient out of the door, and perhaps some GPs even suppose they are going to get their payment from the NHS for doing it. Who knows? We certainly don’t.

Neither did Chris. He came to our Wakefield hypnosis branch and stopped smoking. Which just left him wondering about the whole system that had failed him before.

NO, YOU DON'T HAVE TO STOP SMOKING

Sometimes, people come to us not to stop smoking but for smoking reduction. It’s a choice they make, and we publish a book on reduction. ‘No, You Don’t Have to Stop Smoking’ will be of interest even if you do want to stop completely. Why not take a look at it before you visit our Wakefield hypnosis branch. Here is a taster to get you started.

….. I cannot exaggerate the importance of this diary, so you must decide right now that you are going to do it absolutely as I prescribe. Look, that makes it sound like a chore, but it isn’t. We give this task to people sometimes on the phone in our stop- smoking programmes, and we have never had anyone who has failed to do it, which we think means that even before they start the idea seems like a good one to them. Well, I’m hoping, before I even tell you what this is all about, that the idea of analysing your smoking seems to you to be a good one. Think about it; if you don’t understand your smoking habit, how are you ever going to change it?

So, enough of the preamble; let’s do this. In this chapter, you are going to keep a one-day diary of your smoking, then you’re going to do the same two days later, and then again two days after that, so you will finish with three days’ worth of information. It is important that you have a day’s gap inbetween, so please resist the urge to redesign this plan. It may seem a little odd but there is method in the madness.
