A SHORT CASE HISTORY

From our Basingstoke hypnotherapy branch

Holly called our national advice service to enquire about our Basingstoke hypnotherapy service. Like quite a few of the people who call us, she had tried to stop smoking with the Allen Carr’s Easyway method. She hadn’t succeeded with that, so she wanted to know if hypnotherapy would work for her. Of the smokers we get calling about Easyway, some failed completely and some stopped for a while. So can we help them? Could we help Holly? The answer to both questions is yes, of course.

First, we asked Holly how far she had got. She had in fact stopped for a while, about a month, she thought. She had started smoking again, and had gone back (their guarantee allows this). The second time, though, she hadn’t stopped at all. This was why she had doubts about hypnosis.

Well, the first thing we needed to say was that our Basingstoke hypnotist was not going to do what the Easyway person did. Easyway is often talked about as hypnotherapy, but it isn’t. Holly thought it was, which was of course why she was worried about ‘doing it again’. We assured her she wouldn’t be doing it again, because she hadn’t done it in the first place.

Easyway is group therapy, and as far as we can tell it’s based on the myth that smokers are not addicted. Telling smokers that is of course unhelpful, and no hypnotist would say such a thing. How significant the addiction is is another matter, but telling a smoker they are not addicted is not helpful or ethical. Holly had come to realise she had been given the wrong information. And she wanted to see our Basingstoke hypnotherapist because she knew she needed help with that. We explained that our hypnotist was going to work on the fact that Holly was addicted, and that that had created her psychological dependence. In other words, she was going to work with the facts, not deny them in the hope they would go away.

It can take people a while to undo the damage that wrong information causes. We get this with people who have been to the National Health Service’s smoking cessation service all the time. Holly stopped smoking at our Basingstoke hypnosis service, but one could argue that she shouldn’t have needed to come to us if other people had done a better job.

THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK

Before seeing our Basingstoke hypnotherapist or acupuncturist, it might help you to read the sample pages on our website.
Here is a very small taster:

Addiction – what it is and how it works.

Take a substance, say tobacco, which for the sake of this argument, no-one has ever used. Dream up some marketing campaign to get people not only to try it, but to convince them that, although it tastes revolting, they should keep using it until they can overcome their distaste. Add massive punitive taxation, and then persuade every user that their life would not be worth living without it, even if they are on benefits and have to go without food to get it. Then put a death threat on the pack.

The person who could do all this does not exist. Either millions of people are certifiably insane, or there is something in tobacco that forces them to continue using it.

There are very many learned societies that sit around and talk about addiction and publish terribly erudite papers on the subject but I’m going to be very rude now and say they don’t understand it. How do I know? Because no-one has ever been able to cure it.

(This is not actually true, because there was one doctor who, in a discovery of massive importance, did understand how addiction works, and proposed a really quite simple cure for it, which was proved to work, but there was no way the pharmaceutical companies could find to patent it and make a profit from it so it was quietly dropped. The National Smoking Cessation Institute was set up specifically to continue his work. Dr Mackarness taught a small group of doctors about the mechanisms of addiction and the Institute is the repository of that research. We have offered the information, free, to the nation but the Department of Health has turned it down because if it were brought to light the pharmaceutical companies would withdraw their funding for the NHS smoking cessation service, which is paid for by commercial sponsorship.)
