A STOP-SMOKING TIP

Many people worry that they will put weight on when they stop smoking. You may be one of them. If you are thinking of seeing our LOCATION hypnotist but this is a worry for you, read this first.

There is a really simple reason why people put weight on. It’s because they are consuming more food than they can burn. The excess calories are turned into fat. So why do some smokers eat more when they stop? Well, note first that we said ‘some smokers’. It’s a bit of a myth, because in fact most people don’t.

However, if you have in the past here’s some information you need to know. We just said you have to eat more to put on weight. So first, why can stopping smoking make you do that? Tobacco smoke is toxic. When you consume poison, your body goes into stress, and part of this reaction is to raise your blood sugar level. Smoking all day, your body’s blood sugar is now trained to go up and down like a yo-yo. When you don’t smoke, one of the first things your body tries to do is increase blood sugar. Without a cigarette, it looks for the next best thing – real sugar. It doesn’t have to be sugary food even, because all food converts to sugar, in greater or lesser amounts.

What we see, from this, is that when you stop smoking you need to do it in a way that doesn’t produce unsatisfied cravings. Without the craving, your body won’t look for sugar. Stopping without any help, or using a nicotine replacement product (NRP), you will have unsatisfied cravings. This means you may try to eat to replace tobacco. The answer is to find the right method of stopping, one that doesn’t leave you wanting to smoke. This is why people having therapy are far less likely to put on weight than those trying to stop with drug products.

Once you have seen our LOCATION hypnotist, we don’t expect you to put on weight. However, if you do find you’re eating more we want to know about this. There can be other issues at play. We can help with these, so don’t hesitate to call us if this happens.
