THE NSCI STOP SMOKING HANDBOOK

Here is a small taster from the book. If you are seeing our city centre hypnotherapist in Liverpool, it’s a good idea to read the sample pages first.

….. Some people will move on from there and never smoke again but what do you do? You ask your friend for another one. Now why would you do that? Why, when your experience has just shown that you didn’t enjoy it, would you do it again? What is there in the human brain that has the ability to take information and deliberately reverse it? Well I’ll tell you. It’s exactly what happened when you started smoking all those years ago. Then, you tried one and it was horrible but instead of saying well it’s horrible so I won’t bother you said it’s horrible so I’d better try harder to enjoy it because my fiends do it and they say it’s nice. Or something like that, probably very like that, even if you didn’t say it to yourself consciously.

Now, you smoke and it’s not nice but your brain says hold on, that’s not right, it use to be nice so I’d better do it again. And you do. You miss the point completely. Tobacco smoke is poisonous. When you inhale it you are supposed to reject it, only what you do now is refuse to believe the information you are getting and go back instead to the old days when you were addicted and were unable to tell the difference between good and bad, between safe and poisonous, and you convince yourself that if it tastes bad it’s not because it is bad but because you are misreading it. It’s a fatal mistake, and I do mean fatal.

A SHORT CASE HISTORY

From our Liverpool hypnotherapy branch

Ron hailed from North Wales, but was working on a contract in Merseyside, commuting weekly from home. He could have gone to our Llandudno hypnotherapy branch, near his home, but he preferred to have an evening appointment after work. We therefore offered him a slot at one of our four Liverpool hypnosis branches; city centre, Maghull, Crosby or Formby. He opted to have his hypnotherapy in Maghull, which was convenient for the digs he was staying at.

Why do we have four hypnotherapy branches in one city? Partly because we always try to offer two branches in most locations. This is so that we can provide a male or female therapist, depending on the client’s preference. Naturally Ron didn’t mind which he saw, but some clients, especially women, prefer a female therapist. The other reason here is that Liverpool is a busy location for us, so we like to have cover for sickness and holidays for any client wanting a Liverpool hypnotist. This applies especially for clients who want a short-notice booking, which we always try to help with.

Many clients have what we call a primary issue with stopping smoking, and Ron’s was that he didn’t work indoors, so it was too easy for him to smoke. He was a civil engineering supervisor, so his work took him to various sites around Merseyside. He could smoke in his car, and of course also on site. We often see this issue – wanting to stop smoking and yet smoking just because you can. It looks like a contradiction, and that’s just what it is.

Part of the problem is rules about where people can smoke. They are obviously a good thing, but they have a downside. If you can’t smoke indoors, you are going to be triggered to smoke every time you go outdoors. That was very much the case for Ron. So our Liverpool hypnotherapist’s main concern was to help Ron to break the connection between being able to smoke and doing so. After the hypnotherapy he no longer reacted to being in his car, or outdoors, with lighting up.

It sounds obvious, and yet this is just the sort of creative thinking that makes good hypnotherapy so successful. Of course, this wasn’t Ron’s only issue with stopping smoking, but it was the one that had tripped him up so often before he came to us.
